What are we going to do?
Students, it is with great excitement that we welcome you to Intellectual Virtues Academy High School! Our goals are to connect our community, orient students to high school, and introduce the virtues. Here, we equip every student to think well: creatively, critically and with a capacity for self-growth.

When is it?
Monday, August 28th and Tuesday, August 29th from 8:15 a.m. to 1:57 p.m. (Minimum Day) We offer after school hours until 4:30 p.m., consistent with our Thursday schedule. 

Where is it?
On our school campus - located at 1637 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90813. 

Where should I drop off and pick up my student? 
There are several drop off locations. The closest one is right in front of the Academy on Long Beach Blvd. Cars are not allowed to park in the drop off zone so drivers should please stay in their cars, and students should exit on the sidewalk side only. There are parking options a bit further down the block.

You can also do drop off, and pick up, one-half block further down on Long Beach Blvd. in front of Poly's PAALs campus. You can park there too, except on Tuesday mornings before 8:00 a.m. when it is street sweeping. You can also drop off and pick up on 16th Street.

Public transportation is encouraged.

What do I wear?
Dress-code approved attire. Please see below for more information.

Why we do what we do?
Intellectual Virtues Academy's mission is to foster  meaningful growth in  intellectual character virtues in a  thoughtfulchallenging, and  supportive academic environment. Intellectual character virtues are the deep personal qualities of a good thinker or learner.

In preparation for the 2017-18 school year, please log in to your Parent Portal account using Illuminate. Log into your Parent Portal account and click on the “Forms” tab to view important information and forms needed for the school year. 

TIP- User name is typically your email address.

DRESS CODE GUIDELINES
The Academy has adopted the following general guidelines to enhance student achievement, create a safe and distraction-free learning environment, foster school pride, and operate free from hazard or threat to students’ health, safety, and general welfare. We heard the voices of students last year, therefore made some adjustments to our dress code. 

Outerwear
Jackets/sweaters must be appropriate for school.

Bottoms
Pants, shorts, dresses, and skirts, MUST be school appropriate, worn at an appropriate length (where finger tips lay with arms by the side), WITHOUT words or large logos.
Jeans can be worn WITHOUT rips/slashes/or tears.
Pajama bottoms can be worn ONLY on the designated spirit day.
Leggings/yoga pants/tights can be worn ONLY under other garments.

Tops
Shirts need to be school appropriate, can be worn WITHOUT a logo.
Mid-drifts MUST be covered.
If there is a logo, MUST be an Academy, IVA shirt, or collegial.
Tank tops MUST have straps at least 3 inches wide.

Hats/Caps
School appropriate hats can be worn before, after school, and during breaks. They MUST be taken off within the classroom.
Beanies are okay.
Hoods can ONLY be worn on shoulders, and not over head at anytime while on campus.

Shoes
Safe and school appropriate.
Sandals need to have a strap to hold securely to foot.
Formal shoes can be a two-toe peep.
Shoes need to be on at ALL times.

School appropriate means: Safe, respectful, and conducive to learning. No sexually related, gang, weapons, alcohol, or any drug references on any item of clothing.

SUGGESTED SCHOOL SUPPLIES 
Books and handout materials are provided to students. The Academy asks that you treat books with care so that they will last for many years. The Academy also provides some basic supplies as well as a Google Chromebook for each student. We ask students to bring the following necessary items if their families are able to do so: 

  • Writing utensils
  • Pencils (if mechanical, have extra lead.), 
  • Ballpoint pens (black or blue ink), 
  • Pink eraser, 
  • Pencil sharpener (hand-held with a top).
  • Loose-leaf notebook paper (college ruled)
  • One 1.5”-2” three-ring binder, tabbed binder dividers 
  • College ruled composition notebooks for each of your four core subjects

STUDENT / FAMILY HANDBOOK

SCHOOL DAY HOURS
The school doors will open at 7:30 a.m. and class will begin at 8:15 a.m. The school day ends at 3:27 p.m., except on Thursday, which ends at 1:57 p.m. The Academy closes at 5:30 p.m. Mon., Tues., and Wed., and 4:30 p.m. on Thurs. and Fri.

AFTER SCHOOL SUPPORT
Student support will be available on campus Mon., Tues., Wed. from 3:50 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Thurs. from 2:20 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Fri. from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. A teacher or tutor will be supervising the study hall during these time.

  • 9th Grade- Individual schedules will be issued during New Student Orientation. Look for more information in the next newsletter.
  • 10th Grade- Individual schedules will be emailed to your Academy email address before the first day of school. Parents will also be able to see schedules using Parent Portal in Illuminate. 
GROWING OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
It's not too late to choose the Academy for the 2017-18 school year! We have additional spaces in 9th and 10th grade for this year. As a community-based high school, the ACADEMY values looking to current constituents to help grow the school community. 

If you are a member of a church, sports team, community organization or program, please notify your social network of the ACADEMY as a high school option.  This is a good opportunity for any friends to join the ACADEMY!
