PLP Tips
Students will begin utilizing their personalized learning platform (PLP) this coming week.  Some tips:

Ask your student:
1) Do you have courses that are on the PLP?  Which ones?

2) Would you show me how you log in and what you see when you do? Note: We recommend you login as your student, that way you are sure to see all links, such as Google Docs.

3) Can we look and see what is in each of these sections named here on the dashboard to the left of the screen? (Week, year, progress, college).

4) What is the "Blue Line?"

Good to know: The "Blue Line" in the year section marks time as weeks go by. It does not move on weekends or days when we know most students will not be working on their courses. For example, during Fall Break (Conferences/Thanksgiving).  Students can, of course, access and work on their materials and tasks. These days bring increased opportunities for catching up or forging ahead.

5 ) Discuss how often and when you and your student will sit down to look at and discuss materials and progress in the PLP.  What schedule you establish will depend on your student's strengths and challenges. Your student's mentor and teachers can advise you about frequency.
What to Watch For:

If after the PLP is "live" for a week or two:
1) In the WEEK section, you do not that your student is adding goals under most or all of the days.

2) In the YEAR section, your student cannot show you what work in either or both the first Project and first Power Focus Area is underway.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or the school office.
High School Highlights
Luke C. and Felipe M. have been assigned the task to innovate and design solutions to solve student traffic flow issues in the Guidance Office.  Part of their idea involves reusing wooden pallets to build a sliding door that can deter students from entering specific areas.  HGTV may want to consider dropping Property Brothers and replace it with these two. - From Chris Kaminski

Also, thanks to Zack V. and Will N. for putting the finishing touches on our Augmented Reality Topographical Terrain Map (pictured below). Stop by the Innovation Center to check it out.
FHS Senior Elijah H. received his Eagle Scout Badge in July 2017. This is a significant accomplishment which involves hard work and dedication. Elijah had his Eagle Board of Review at St. Vincent de Paul Parrish where he became an official Eagle Scout. The Eagle ceremony will be in October. To become an Eagle Scout, one must earn a total of 21 Merit Badges - Elijah earned 41. For his project, Elijah and two fellow scouts worked during the summer at the Fire Station and Police Station when they dug up old shrubs and planted new shrubs and flowers. Then they placed statues honoring firemen and policemen. The main purpose of an Eagle Project is to show leadership in all areas from fundraising to recruiting help and leading the volunteers in the jobs that need to be accomplished. Elijah is now in his 2nd year of the Polaris program and attending Tri-C for his firefighter/EMT certification.  Congratulations to Elijah for a job well done! - From Mary Moore

This AWESOME "See something, say something" moment was created by Jannah A. This a student who is new to FHS and does not speak English. I asked her to translate and produce a paper on her "dream job" and then research the qualities and requirements of the job. She chose "decorative engineer," or interior designer, and it's safe to say I was incredibly impressed with the work produced. This is a cool example of what can be accomplished with an attitude like Jannah's! - From Grant Graves

There is always good news to report!  Alexis F. has been accepted as a violinist for the 2017 Northeast Regional Orchestra through the Ohio Music Educators Association. She was one of 30 violinists selected to perform from the northeast region. She auditioned back in May and we just found out she made it in! Very exciting! The concert is in November at Ohio State University. - From Hillery Needham

Excerpt from a parent email, referencing last year's 9th grade team as well as this year's back-to-school night:  "I want to add she did amazing last year.  All of the teachers are just so understanding and have such open arms, as well as a positive outlook on the year.  I like this group of teachers because it seems like they really want one on one time more one-on-one time with the students and I love that positive experience all around today. I'm so happy we have the opportunity to go to open house. I love being able to be connected with the teachers in my daughter's learning path and schedule for the year. I'm very happy to be part of Fairview!" - From Mary Cory

Mr. Narducci would like to thank the following students for helping him do his seating charts.  They did the computer work while Mr. Narducci placed students at their assigned seats. They are: Jamie C., Paul Z., Jacob C., Maeve M., Nate W., and  Matt K.

My mentoring group worked together and came up with some great ideas for the Texas fundraising...they expressed so much emotion and concern for those struggling in Houston. It was heartwarming to see students share these emotions with each other. - From Becky Hicks

A HUGE shout out to Mr. Tom Bryner (one of the smartest people I know!). He took the initiative without being asked (but after observing my failed attempts and the the pile of broken plastic and cardboard in the parking lot below my window!) to make and install a plexiglass cover for my window that my air conditioner can vent out of. Thanks Tom, you're an angel! - From Colleen Sliwinski

My Drama class did their first group scene work and they did a great job!  My film class has 22 kids and they have all been engaged in all conversations so far.  Good way to end the week! - From Craig Cohan

The Robotics club will have its first meeting next week September 6th, at 3:30 p.m. in room 250. FHS alumnus Steve Browning, who designs and builds robots as a career, is working with our team as one of our lead mentors. He will be bringing in a robot of some kind to show the students at the meeting. - From Andy Bruening
