This Sunday we welcome
Brian McLaren as our guest preacher this morning. Often cited as one of the most influential Christian leaders in America, Brian has authored 20 books on faith in a contemporary global context, including
Everything Must Change: Jesus, Global Crises, and a Revolution of Hope.
You are invited to attend Brian's Staley Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, September 24, in the Smith 900 Room of the Alvarez College Union when he will address the broad relevance of Jesus's message and ministry beyond the borders of the Christian church and how it can inform anyone seeking to be an agent of kindness, justice, inclusion, peace, and hope. You are also invited to attend the Maloney Lectures, "The Art of Getting Lost: Wandering in the World's Religions," which will be presented at 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday evenings, September 25 and 26, in the Smith 900 Room of the Alvarez College Union. The 2017 Maloney lecturer is Stephen Prothero, C. Allyn and Elizabeth V. Russell Professor of Religion at Boston University.

Kathryn Delisa Ordronneau, born February 17, 2017, daughter of Roger and Delisa Smith Ordronneau at the 9:45 service.
Offering of Letters
In Brian McLaren's book
Everything Must Change, we are encouraged to engage in change that impacts local, national, and global policy. The organization Bread for the World has been at work for years speaking to our leaders in Washington, D.C. and other places about the need to care for the most vulnerable in our communities and throughout the world. Their Offering of Letters encourages us to share our thoughts with our elected leaders and encourage them to vote in such a way that more people will have access to life saving food. On September 24 after each worship service there will be tables set up with sample letters, envelopes, pens, etc. that will make it easy for us to share this message with members of Congress so that they might soften their hearts and vote in favor of caring for the poor. We will also provide opportunities to send letters digitally. This event, co-sponsored by our Community and Global Mission Committees, supports our commitment to bring an end to hunger and poverty. Congregational Meeting
The Session has called a congregational meeting for 10:40 a.m., October 8, in the sanctuary for the purpose of dissolving the pastoral relationship between Elizabeth McGregor Simmons and DCPC, effective October 31, 2017, in order that she may be honorably retired.

Blessing of the Animals
All God's creatures have a place in the choir! Bring your furry, scaly, or feathered friend to the annual Blessing of the Animals as we give thanks for and renew our commitment to God's gift of creation. The service which will last about 20 minutes will take place on the lawn in front of Lingle Chapel at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 8.

SAGES Day Trip to the NC Mountains, Thursday October 19th. Coach bus will leave at 8:15 a.m. to West Jefferson to take in the fall leaves, enjoy lunch at Shatley Springs and visit several area frescos. Bus Cost $20. Lunch $8-12 (off menu) $18 (family style). Doug Ottati, the Craig Family Distinguished Professor of Reformed Theology and Justice, will present a three week refresher course in Reformation and Reformed theology in celebration of the 500
th
Anniversary. We will explore "scripture alone," or the basic methodological principle of the Reformation, "grace alone," or its basic substantive principle, and the humanist character and content of the Reformed movement. So, three sessions: sola scriptura, sola gratia, and a Reformed Christian humanism.
