Hillsborough Jr. Raiders Touch a Truck Event a Huge Success
The Jr. Raiders held their free Touch a Truck event on September 10th. The event gave participants the opportunity to spend the day exploring vehicles of all kinds from dump trucks to fire trucks.
Committeeman Doug Tomson, along with the Hillsborough Township Department of Public works were on hand to show off some of the Township's big trucks.

On Tuesday, September 12, 2017, The Northeast Organic Farming of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ) in partnership with the Hillsborough Winter Farm Market presented a donation to the Community Assistance Network at the Hillsborough Township Committee Meeting. The $300 donation was presented to Committeeman Doug Tomson, Recreation, Parks and Social Services Director Bob Wagner, and Mayor Carl Suraci. NOFA-NJ and the Hillsborough Winter Farm Market aimed to provide a market for farmers and artisans throughout the winter months, engage the community with the local food system, and provide assistance to the Hillsborough Food Bank. The Hillsborough Winter Farm Market was a true success!

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

At the September 12th Township Committee Meeting, the Mayor and Township Committee presented a proclamation proclaiming September 2017 as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. During the month of September, we call attention to a disease that affects women across our county, state and country, with the American Cancer Society estimating that 15,000 American women are projected to lose their lives to ovarian cancer this year. These women are mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, community members and cherished friends, and the absence they leave in our hearts will be deeply felt forever.
Women who are middle aged and older, who have a family history of ovarian or breast cancer, or have had certain cancers in the past are at increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. Ovarian Cancer knows no boundaries, the disease can strike anyone, across lines of age, ethnicity, and race. Because Ovarian Cancer often goes undetected until advanced stages, increasing the awareness of risk factors is critical to fighting this disease as it is estimated that about 22,000 new cases of Ovarian Cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.
The public awareness campaign strives to increase knowledge about this disease and recognizes the best defense against Ovarian Cancer is early detection, therefore it is essential that women know the risk factors associated with the disease, and that men are educated so they can help their wives, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and girlfriends.
This month is dedicated to the prevention and awareness. It is also to honor those we have lost, show our support for women who bravely carry on the fight, and take action to lessen the tragic toll Ovarian Cancer takes on families across our county.
The Mayor and the Township Committee call upon citizens, government agencies, organizations, health care providers, and research institutions to raise Ovarian Cancer awareness and continue helping women live longer, healthier lives and urge women to talk to their health care providers to learn more about this disease.

sborough Township, NJ 08844 between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm," announced Committeeman Frank DelCore, Liaison to the Office of Emergency Management at Tuesday's Township Committee Meeting.
A Point of Distribution Drill is conducted to test the Township's capabilities to distribute supplies and medications to residents and visitors to Hillsborough Township in the event of a natural or man-made disaster or pandemic. Hillsborough businesses were invited to donate discount coupons and other promotional giveaways to be included in the supply bags. Please note, there will not be any medication distributed during this drill.
"Township residents are encouraged to assist in the drill by driving through the POD and receiving the supply bag. The more people that participate the better prepared the Township will be in the event of an actual emergency," added Committeeman Frank DelCore.

Hillsborough Rewards Credit Card Program Accepting Grant Applications
Hillsborough Based Non-Profit Groups Serving Youth and
Seniors Invited to Apply - Deadline is October 6th
"The Hillsborough Township Credit Card Advisory Committee will be accepting grant applications beginning September 12th for the second round of grants for 2017," announced Committeeman Doug Tomson Liaison to the Credit Card Advisory Committee.
"Applications will be made available on the Township website or can be picked up in the Administration Office for any Township based non-profit, senior or youth organizations to apply for grants up to $2,000 funded through the Hillsborough Rewards Credit Card Program," continued Committeeman Tomson.

or copies are available at the Administration Office. Completed applications must be submitted by Friday, October 6, 2017 to the Administration office to be considered for eligible grant funding.

Rutgers Cooperative Extension To Host Community Education And Outreach Event
Hillsborough Township has partnered with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension on a grant that was awarded by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to improve water quality and reduce flooding in the Royce Brook Watershed. Hunt Club Road Pond, a retention pond located on Township Open Space property in the Fox Chase Estates residential development has been selected as a project site. The work will focus on re-establishing native vegetation along the northern shoreline, between the walking path and the pond. The vegetation has been selected to improve the ecological health of the pond and create a more inviting and engaging habitat for residents to enjoy. There will be a community education and outreach session hosted by Rutgers Cooperative Extension on Monday, September 25th at 7:00 PM in the rear multi-purpose room at the Hillsborough Township Municipal Complex. Details will be given about Hunt Club Road Pond Restoration Project and to inform Hillsborough residents of an opportunity to participate in the Rain Garden Rebate Program. A rain garden is a landscape shallow depression that allows water to absorb slowly into the ground, preventing stormwater runoff from carrying pollution to our drinking water resources. An initial meeting was held on June 7th.

The Hillsborough Township Senior Olympics will be held on Tuesday, September 26th, at the Ann Van Middlesworth Park. The Olympics will commence from 9am until 2pm with sign in beginning at 8:30 am. This Township sponsored event is open to all Hillsborough Senior Citizens of all fitness levels.
The participation fee is $10.00 per senior, which includes the Olympic games and a commemorative t-shirt. All pre registered participants will receive participation in all games as well as a BBQ lunch. Pre-registration to participate in the Olympics is required. Seniors are invited to contact Social Services at 908-369-3880 to register for this fun filled day.

The Steps Together team will participate in the Steeplechase Distance Walk & Run on September 24th in Hillsborough. The team will be raising funds for local families impacted by a medical crisis while also supporting the Cancer Center at RWJ-Somerset by participating in their race. Event options include a 2 Mile Walk, 5K, 10K or Sprints for Kids 2 to 11.
By joining the Steps Together team, you will automatically be registered to participate in the 2017 Steeplechase Distance Run/Walk. Team members will receive weekly emails with training tips, suggested workouts, invites to group training and fundraising advice. In addition, all team members will receive a shirt to wear race day highlighting beneficiaries and sponsors.
New in 2017, the Steeplechase Distance Run/Walk added special pricing for those 15 and under across all events. This has allowed Steps Together to reduce the team price for those 15 and under to $25.

HRC Fitness to host 4th Annual 5K Run, Walk, Dash for Down Syndrome and Fall Festival

In keeping with their commitment to serve the community, HRC Fitness will be hosting the 4th annual Charity 5K event on Sunday, October 1st in Hillsborough. The primary beneficiary of the event is GiGi's Playhouse Hillsborough which opened its doors in January 2015 to provide therapeutic programs for individuals with Down syndrome.
This event provides an opportunity to bring together many local businesses in support of GiGi's Playhouse and it's participants. This year, HRC expanded its charitable efforts by including the ability for other organizations to create teams for the purpose of raising money and awareness for their cause. One such organization that has taken advantage of this opportunity is the Joseph D Hernandez Foundation. Foundation members created a race team at the event in support of the foundation, whose mission is to raise funds to purchase and distribute used and new sports equipment for underprivileged boys and girls that want to play organized sports but lack the financial resources to do so. County Bus Routes Now on Google Maps
Somerset County Freeholder Brian D. Levine has announced that the county's public bus routes are now just a click away on Google Maps.
"The addition of our county bus routes to Google Transit will be a great convenience for students heading back to Raritan Valley Community College this fall, as well as for others who rely on our SCOOT, DASH and CAT buses for work or other transportation," Freeholder Levine said.
Go to Google Maps on desktop or mobile (
https://maps.google.com) and click on the Directions arrow next to the search box. Select the public transit icon, enter your start point and destination within Somerset County, and get county bus route information to guide you to your destination.

Recovery Works! Public Invited to Community Celebration
Free Event will be held Saturday, Sept. 23rd
"We're holding this free event to acknowledge the resiliency of people recovering from mental health and substance use disorders," said Freeholder Levine, human services liaison.
The community program, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., includes coffee and a light breakfast. Participants can enter a drawing to win a $25 Dunkin Donuts gift card and other prizes. Planned activities include games, puzzles, an adult coloring corner and a healthy cooking demonstration at 10 a.m. Yoga, meditation and gardening workshops will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 12 to 1 p.m.

'Project Warm Your Heart' Clothing Drive
The Somerset County Commission on the Status of Women is conducting its eighth annual "Project Warm Your Heart" to collect new or gently-used coats, mittens, gloves, scarves and hats for children only. Donations are requested by Oct. 31.
Children of families served by the Food Bank Network of Somerset County and other organizations will benefit from this winter-clothing drive, which follows the commission's recent collection of school supplies held during the summer months.
Donations may be dropped off to the Somerset County Freeholders' Office on the third floor of the county administration building at 20 Grove St., Somerville, now through Tuesday, Oct. 31. The office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except Columbus Day. Free parking is available in the adjacent Bernie Field Parking Deck off East High Street.

October Program Schedule - All Senior Centers
The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services have announced the October program schedule. All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed.
This month, all centers will be closed on Monday, Oct. 9, in observance of Columbus Day.
All Somerset County-operated senior centers offer a nutritionally balanced lunch, Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée and a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Please make reservations before 10 a.m., at least one business day in advance. Why not invite a friend or neighbor to join you for lunch! Or come earlier in the day and enjoy one of the center's many programs.
If you drive or have your own ride, you can attend any of the centers.

Disability Advocates Awards Nominations Sought
Somerset County Freeholder Brian D. Levine invites residents to nominate an individual, organization or business in Somerset County whose efforts in the area of advocacy, service and inclusion on behalf of persons with disabilities is exemplary.
The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services is seeking nominations for its 2017 Disability Advocates Awards Program to acknowledge individuals, businesses or organizations that promote independence and empower adults and children who have disabilities to freely exercise their life choices and fully participate in community life. The deadline
for nominations is Friday, Oct. 6.
"I hope residents will take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on these exemplary leaders of our community who through their actions demonstrate compassion, respect, and empowerment for people with disabilities," said Freeholder Brian D. Levine, Office on Aging and Disability Services liaison. "Their efforts enhance the lives of others and help them to lead fuller, more productive lives. We are honored to recognize these praiseworthy people who serve Somerset County."
