We are proud and privileged to celebrate this year's Heroes of Hospice of Santa Barbara on Sept. 27 at the Four Seasons Resort, The Biltmore. This year, we honor the Flower Empower program of the Dream Foundation; Ridley-Tree Cancer Center; and Charles Zimmer-longtime past executive director of Hospice of Santa Barbara.

These outstanding community volunteers play a vital role in our mission and have demonstrated compassionate dedication to our clients who are experiencing the impact of life-threatening illness or grieving the death of a loved one. We hope you will join us in celebrating these local heroes. Ticket reservations are available online or by contacting (805) 563-8820 or [email protected].

My Path at Hospice of Santa Barbara - A Reflection by Mary Wagner

Al Perderte Yo a Ti - A Poem by Ernesto Cardenal

When our colleague Alejandro Vasquez, MFTI, Bilingual Bereavement Counselor lost his sister to breast cancer more than six years ago, he recited this poem by the Puerto Rican author Ernesto Cardenal during her service.  She was the oldest of the six siblings as well as the only girl in the family.

Learn how you can write your own poems to help your healing process in our
 "Healing Through Poetry" group here.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

HSB attended the September 6th "Let's Talk About Suicide" Film Screening and Conversation which took place at the Goleta Community Center. A crowd of 60 gathered to learn and share their experiences.

To acknowledge the ways suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones, our staff was present at the Sept. 10 "Out of the Darkness Walk" at Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara. We are touched by all the reasons people came out to walk. Thank you to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for organizing the event in honor of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
