New Local Resource for U.P. Vegans and Those Interested in Making the Transition
Natasha Lantz, one of the founding members of Northern Vegans, recently started  Plant Centered Living  (PCL).  PCL helps people to better understand the joys and challenges their transition to a plant centered lifestyle will bring and how to articulate what being plant centered truly means to those around them-family, friends, health care providers, co-workers, etc.  Having confidence in one's decision to lead a plant centered lifestyle is critical to the successful navigation of daily living in a world that is not designed to make the healthy and ethical choice, the easy choice.  PCL offers a range of resources from mentoring to  Natasha's Notes, a practical 75-page resource guide.  Plant Centered Living services and resources are available to those living in the U.P. and anywhere around the world, so please help Natasha get the word out by sharing the website with your personal networks.  Visit   www.plantcenteredliving.com , email   [email protected] or call 906.235-5430 to learn more.

Please do not support any events or places where animals are being used in the name of entertainment or worse, education. Boycott all circuses including marine circuses (like Sea World); aquariums; and zoos of all kinds. Ringling, is ringing in compassionate peoples' new year with a victory for captive wildlife. Circus protests by animal activists have resulted in a change evidenced by the recent announcement by Ringling of closure by May 2017. Animal Hero Kids co-presidents react to the good news.

Why Vegans Don't Go to Aquariums

..." First and foremost aquariums and marine parks exist mainly for their own greed and human entertainment.
recent investigation by South Florida Sun-Sentinel found that mammals sold for marine parks and aquariums, such as dolphins and whales can be worth millions of dollars... In 2013, a whopping 90% of Georgia Aquarium's incoming revenue was from  Program Service Revenue, which refers to admissions at the gate, and facilities that are held at the aquarium such as gift shops and photography services... Aquariums Are Unnatural and Unethical...."  Full article here:  http://urbanvegan.net/aquarium/

" The Georgia Aquarium  obtained  a manta collecting permit from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to legally capture a wild manta ray for display. And while manta rays are listed as a "prohibited species," by the FWC, the Georgia Aquarium applied for an Education/Exhibition Special Activity License... So now, after several months of preparation, the Georgia Aquarium team is finally ready to transport a 102-inch wide, 230-pound female manta ray from St. Augustine, Florida to Atlanta, Georgia, and I was invited to observe the transport. This is the story of our 8-hour journey across state lines..."  More here: Manta Ray Transport

Quote of the month:
"Isn't man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife - birds, kangaroos, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxes and dingoes - by the million in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic animals by the billion and eats them. This in turn kills man by the millions, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man, who kills so easily and so violently, and once a year, sends out cards praying for Peace on Earth."   David Coats

Northern Vegans is always in need of donations to continue our great work in the community.  As most of you know, not only are we a not for profit group with no paid employees, but we also often fund our group with our personal funds as board members.  Northern Vegans has existed since 2006 and a short list of our accomplishments in the community include: library donations of vegan related books and media numbering in the hundreds; dozens of movie/documentary showings; over a hundred restaurant meet ups and other socials; numerous vegan presentations; countless tabling events; immense amount of vegan literature dispersed; and the list really goes on and on.

Help us continue spreading the message and consider donating to us today.  No amount is too small and we use every bit of it to our fullest extent.  In fact it is not outlandish to say that for every $1.00 that is donated we put at least 50 cents more into that $1.00 simply because we work on a 100% volunteer basis, no salaries, and several of us continuously put our own personal money into the necessary expenses for the group.

Please send donations to:

Vegan Retreat in the Adirondacks!

The Priory Retreat House

Lanni Lantto (Marquette) & Dustin Katona (Negaunee) have attended past Northern Vegan potlucks and are currently running a "Spiritual B&B" on 100 gorgeous acres in the Adirondack Mnts of Upstate New York.  The Priory Retreat House seeks to be a community of peace, stillness, and refuge for people of any faith, ethnicity, nation, or culture.  The house and grounds are places of stillness and genuine hospitality amidst an ever-changing world.  The Priory offers overnight retreats, workshops & programs for individuals and hosts groups looking for a gathering space.

Lanni, Dustin, and their son Satori are vegans and believe that their compassion towards all living beings is a part of their faith life.   The couple strive to hold true to these values by offering a variety of plant based meals which makes  the Priory truly unique since it is a Christian based retreat house.   One of their goals is to bring more like-minded people/groups on retreat because they know first hand the frustration of being offered only meat/dairy options.  The Priory is a 501(c)3 non-profit and is fully funded by donations.  They would love to host fellow yoopers and say that it is a lot like the UP except for the HUGE mountains! Please consider contacting them for a retreat or helping by giving a donation in support of their mission:  http://prioryretreathouse.org
