Demo by Professor Jack Gallagher of the University of Delaware's College of Earth, Ocean and Environment

At 10 am in the Demonstration Tent, meet Professor Jack Gallagher. Dr. Gallagher will discuss sea level rise and coping with a salty future for coastal farms. Jack is an expert in salt marsh and dune plants that have evolved tolerances to flooding and salt. These plants can be used in place of traditional crops, and provide products including food, animal feed, fiber, bedding, cat litter, and landscape materials. They can also be a buffer between natural and man-made landscapes and waste water treatment. This is sure to be a fascinating discussion of a subject of great importance to us in Lewes and other coastal communities.

  Grilled or Sautéed Shishito Peppers

Shishito peppers seem to be everywhere these days--especially at restaurants where they are served as appetizers. They are delicately sweet and mild, and an easy snack to throw on the grill. You can also just heat a little olive oil in a saute pan on top of the stove. Cook them at medium, tossing and turning them frequently until they blister, but don't char them. Should take 10 to 15 minutes to cook a panful of them. When they're finished cooking, toss them with a little sea salt and add a squeeze of fresh lemon. They are being harvested right now, and can be found at a number of farmers' stands at our market.

SNAP and WIC at the Market

The Market offers the SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program at the Market. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20.

In addition to SNAP, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market welcomes participants in Delaware's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. WIC coupons can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the Market.
