There is no "one" path to a career in Biomedical Engineering - just as this important technical area is interdisciplinary, there are many ways to chart your academic career. Biomedical engineering is therefore a very large field and would take a gifted person several lifetimes to master just a few of the many disciplines. This brochure will assist you in understanding the field's breadth, and help you focus in on what really interests you. The brochure describes many of the issues and topics that interest today's biomedical engineers and will aid you in charting your future educational and career choices.

The first IEEE Life Sciences Conference (LSC) will be held in Sydney, Australia, 13-15 December 2017. The overall theme of the conference is "Personalized Healthcare & Wearables". The IEEE Life Sciences Technical Community (LSTC), which is supported by multiple IEEE member societies, is the sponsor of the conference. As such, the conference will cover diverse topics within the theme.

LSC 2017 will include tutorials and a scientific program composed of plenary talks, invited sessions, and poster presentations of peer-reviewed papers. In addition, there will be a host of special events, including a Standards Track, an IEEE Women in Engineering event, a High School Competition, an e-textile style fashion show, and an IBM Big Data/Watson event in partnership with the IEEE Big Data Initiative

Papers are limited to 4 pages, with an additional $200 fee for up to 1 extra page. Four pages must contain technical content, figures, and references, while the 5th page may contain only references. This is the maximum number of pages that will be accepted, including all figures, tables, and references. Any documents that exceed the 5-page limit, or that have a 5th page containing anything other than references, will be rejected.

Author Instructions for Contributed Papers - Full

C ontributed Papers-Full are presented either as an oral presentation or a poster presentation. The type of presentation will be determined by the Conference Editorial Board based on factors such as the reviewer's suggestions and topic of the paper. All presented and contributed papers will be published in IEEE Xplore and indexed by PubMed and Medline.


At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

Congratulations to Emilio Sacristan, Ph.D., who was newly elected as the Vice Chair of the Translational Engineering & Healthcare Innovations (TEHI) Technical Committee

I am honored to serve as the Vice Chair of the Technical Committee on Translational Engineering and Healthcare Innovation. I have only been a member of the committee for a little less than a year, but I have always been deeply interested in the challenges of innovation and translation in our field and I am also a believer that this committee´s work is of the utmost importance to the future growth and impact of the EMBS.

In the eyes of many in the clinical side of Healthcare, the activities and publications of EMBS are still seen as purely academic. On the other hand, for many academic members of EMBS, the efforts required converting laboratory knowledge into commercially viable, effectively deployed, products and services seem foreign, trivial, and better left to "lesser minds" in industry. The reality, that I have lived myself as an entrepreneur, is that innovation can only be successfully translated with the active collaboration of academic researchers, clinicians, and many other industry specialists. 

Fulfilling this need is a huge opportunity and a natural fit for EMBS, but it requires developing new activities and services for our community, and developing partnerships with other societies and agencies- I see this Technical Committee on Translational Engineering and Healthcare Innovation, as the entity that can provide the EMBS with the strategic guidance to implement many of the new proposed initiatives.

NEW BIOSENSORS AND TECHNOLOGIES-INCLUDING THOSE FOR BONE REGROWTH AND WOUND HEALING-ADVANCE ANIMAL HEALTH CARE WHILE ALSO PROVIDING A FERTILE TESTING GROUND FOR HUMAN HEALTH.

Dogs have bad breath. But when Montana sheep rancher Katy Harjes noticed her collie, Hoshi, had particularly bad breath and facial swelling, she was concerned that the symptoms might be a sign of something serious. She was right; ten-year-old Hoshi had squamous cell carcinoma, a common type of oral tumor found in dogs. Luckily, Hoshi was a suitable candidate for a state- of-the-art bone regrowth procedure. This pioneering is just one example of the many new techniques and technologies being developed by top veterinary schools as they increasingly rely on principles from the field of biomedical engineering. These advances are on the cutting edge not only of veterinary medicine but also of biomedical engineering. This means that while these veterinary schools are improving the lives of countless animals, they may also be laying the groundwork for novel improvements to human health

Patient-specific left ventricular flow simulations from Transthoracic Echocardiography: robustness evaluation and validation against Ultrasound Doppler and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The combination of medical imaging with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has enabled the study of 3D blood flow on a patient-specific level. However, with models based on gated high-resolution data, the study of transient flows, and any model implementation into routine cardiac care, is challenging. The present paper presents a novel pathway for patient-specific CFD modelling of the left ventricle (LV), using 4D transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) as input modality. To evaluate the clinical usability, two sub-studies were performed. First, a robustness evaluation was performed where repeated models with alternating input variables were generated for 6 subjects and changes in simulated output quantified. Second, a validation study was carried out where the pathway accuracy was evaluated against pulsed-wave Doppler (100 subjects), and 2D through-plane phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging measurements over 7 intraventricular planes (6 subjects). The robustness evaluation indicated a model deviation of <12%, with highest regional and temporal deviations at apical segments and at peak systole, respectively. The validation study showed an error of < 11% (velocities < 10 cm/s) for all subjects, with no significant regional or temporal differences observed. With the patient-specific pathway shown to provide robust output with high accuracy, and with the pathway dependent only on 4DTTE, the method has a high potential to be used within future clinical studies on 3D intraventricular flow patterns. To this, future model developments in the form of e.g. anatomically accurate LV valves may further enhance the clinical value of the simulations.

Managing Heart Failure at Home with Point-of-Care Diagnostics

The objective of this study is the development of an inexpensive point-of-care sensor for detecting the primary heart failure marker peptide, NT-proBNP. The device technology is based on an antibody sandwich assay, but with three innovative aspects. First, chemical amplification is carried out via oxidation of silver nanoparticles (NPs) attached to signaling antibodies rather than by enzymatic amplification. The electrochemical method is faster and eliminates the need for long-term storage of enzymes. Second, the antibody sandwich is formed on mobile magnetic beads. This enhances the rate of mass transfer of the biomarker and the signaling antibody to the primary detection antibody, which is immobilized on the magnetic beads. Third, the sensor itself is fabricated on a paper platform with screen-printed electrodes. This, coupled with assembly by simple paper folding, keeps the cost of the sensor low. On the basis of the results presented in this article, we conclude that this inexpensive paper-based sensor represents a viable technology for point-of-care testing of NT-proBNP, but nevertheless several challenges remain prior to clinical implementation. These include attaining a lower detection limit and better reproducible, and optimizing the device for human blood.

EMBS Welcome TNSRE New EiC Dan Ferris
EMB is pleased to introduce the incoming Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE-TNSRE, Dan Ferris. Dan is the Robert W. Adenbaum Professor & Senior Associate Chair in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida. His research focuses on the neural control of human locomotion, and he is quite familiar with the breadth of research areas that fall under the scope of TNSRE. His role commences in January, 2018. However, he is already working with Paul Sajda, the current Editor-in-Chief, to ensure a smooth transition. We would like to thank Paul Sajda for his leadership of the journal over the past six years. We would also like to thank all of the candidates for the position - it was an outstanding pool of talented individuals. Dan will be joined by Kara McArthur as the new Managing Editor of TNSRE.

        Dan Ferris 

Daniel Ferris, Ph.D., is currently the Robert W. Adenbaum Professor of Engineering Innovation and Senior Associate Chair in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida. He studies the neuromechanical control of human locomotion in health and disability. Most of his research currently focuses on bionic lower limb prostheses, robotic lower limb exoskeletons, and mobile brain imaging with high-density electroencephalography. Prior to joining the University of Florida in June 2017, he spent 16 years on the faculty at the University of Michigan. Prof. Ferris received his B.S. from the University of Central Florida in 1992, his M.S. from the University of Miami in 1994, and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1998. He also spent time as a post-doctoral researcher in the UCLA Department of Neurology from 1998 to 2000, and in the University of Washington Department of Electrical Engineering from 2000 to 2001. Dr. Ferris has published more than 85 peer-reviewed journal papers and has funded his laboratory with more than $13 million in external grants and contracts.
Kara McArthur

Kara McArthur is an American Medical Writers Association certified medical  editor and writer. She has over 20 years of experience in scholarly publishing,  including serving as founding managing editor of the IEEE Journal of  Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine and administrator of IEEE  Journal of Electromagnetics, RF and Microwaves in Medicine and Biology.  Past positions include managing editor of Cambridge University  Press's International Journal of Technology Assessment in Health Care and  director of communications for the Department of Medicine, Baylor College of  Medicine. 

She received her B.A. degree in sociology and completed graduate
work in healthcare ethics, both at Rice University, and she currently serves on
two IRBs, an oncology IRB and a community IRB in the Dominican Republic.
She has over 20 peer-reviewed research publications. Her freelance work
includes writing, editing, and evaluation research for national and international
nonprofits
