September 24, 2017: Jewish High Holy Days Service: Choices and Challenges
Rev. Joy Atkinson
The High Holy Days of Judaism provide an opportunity for observing Jews to consider the moral choices they have made over the past year, to own up to wrongdoing, and to begin a New Year with a clean slate. What might these observances have to teach us all about taking stock of the choices and challenges in our lives?
Basket Share 9/24 will be distributed 50/50 to our Partner Church in Transylvania.
(If you have an announcement for the Sunday service, send it to Julie Prentice

I look forward to a very busy year around UUCM. I will soon be presenting the Board with some ideas for interim projects for this second interim year. Meanwhile, remember that I am also here to carry out normal pastoral duties. If you would like to meet with me to discuss membership, your spiritual path, a ritual you would like help with, issues you may be facing, ideas you have about the functioning of the congregation, or for ANY reason, place feel free to contact me, via email or by phone (
510 821-2394
).
We will be announcing a date for a Sunday New Member Ceremony soon. If you are interested in joining the congregation as a member, please contact me or Thomas Ervin, Membership Committee Chair. We would love to welcome you.
I will be offering an Adult Education class this Fall on the American Transcendentalists, a small group of Nineteenth Century characters who were very influential in the shaping of the American character, as well as American literature and philosophy. They are also a important part of our Unitarian and Universalist history. We will read original works by R.W. Emerson, H.D. Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Bronson Alcott, Elizabeth Peabody and others. The class will meet for five Sundays,
1-3:00 PM: October 15, 22, 29 and November 5 and 19. Call the UUCM office or contact me to sign up.
May the autumn season bring you bright moments and peace.

For all you night owls the

Social Justice Chair and Supervisory Opportunities
|
|
|
|
As our shared culture continues to change, each of us is called to respond to the new and exciting opportunities that arise.
Given that UUCM must continue to embody our commitment in the life and work of our congregation and our community, your Social Justice Committee - (charged with honoring and serving Unitarian Universalism's central commitment to justice and service) needs young people (under 80!) to step into:
- Chairmanship: Chairing the SJ Committee is actually easier than you might think!
- Community hands-on homeless services. After a decade of personally satisfying and fulfilling service, Joan Nelson, and June Fesler, regret that they are no longer physically able to organize and provide meals for our two direct, hands-on homeless outreach programs.
Please think about enriching your own life with the privilege (yes it IS a privilege!) of supervising the (once a week) Sunday Women's Winter Shelter (November through April. Contact Joan). Or the (once a month first Sundays) Mill Street Emergency Shelter (contact June). Teams (couples, families, friends, relatives, etc.) find these projects very rewarding.
