Communication & School Safety

Communication with parents is important. The weekly school newsletter is a great tool for parents to stay informed. And, as you now know, we use text messaging to keep parents updated with important reminders, as well as in the event of an emergency at school.

School Safety:  The safety of everyone on our campus is paramount to us. Parent Volunteers must be compliant with Diocese requirements, and we all understand what 'stranger danger' means! Though you may feel comfortable being on campus, some of us may not know who you are. All visitors must come to the office and check in with us before coming on campus. We appreciate your cooperation.

Please click on the link HERE for important information regarding what to do if there were an emergency at school.
Reminder: All students, K-8th grade, should be dropped off in the morning in the circle
and enter thru the front of the school. Parents, please do not park in the
faculty parking lot (7:30am-2pm) to drop off your children.
If Kinder parents still need to walk their student onto campus, please park in a visitor parking space and enter through the front of the school.
No students should enter thru the back side of the school.  Thank you.

LETTER FROM MRS. RYAN
Dear Parents,

At St. Rose, we are all about continual quality improvement.  To this end, the faculty and I have recently reviewed our system of awards for report cards grades in the areas of effort and conduct. One of the things we know from educational research concerning motivation is that praise given lavishly and liberally may result in congratulating mediocrity. This can convey an unintentional message to the students that we think mediocrity is all they are capable of.  So this year, we are telling students in grades 4 - 8 that each of them begins every new trimester with a grade of
Satisfactory in the areas of effort and conduct.  Those who put forth their best efforts in school work and who exhibit classroom and playground behavior consistent with the St. Rose Way will earn a mark of
Excellent on their report card.  Students who choose not to do what is required of them will see
Needs Improvement on their report cards.  A grade of
Satisfactory means acceptable, even though there is room for growth.  Although these are subtle changes, we feel certain that they will motivate our students to do their best and strive for the mark of
Excellence, rather than just expecting it.  The primary grade teachers are using these same guidelines and explaining them to their students in more age appropriate ways.

For the time being, we have chosen to discontinue the use of the Principal's Citizenship Award which is based on a student's effort and conduct grade.  We are adding a new School-wide Learning Expectation Award which will be given to students based on specific strengths and achievements exhibited by the child. I will outline this award in more detail in future newsletters.

Please know that I love to hear your ideas, questions and concerns.  Contact me any time you would like to share them with me. Have I told you recently what a joy it is to be with your children on a daily basis and witness their growth and learning?  Thank you for sharing them with us.

School Policy for Illness (from school handbook)
It's that time of year! Colds, coughs, sniffles, flu, etc.
All those little germs and bugs are busy jumping around the classrooms.
Here are a few basic guidelines for parents whose child(ren) may be coming down with a bug!

Fever
Fever free for 24 hours without Tylenol or Motrin before returning to school
Cough / Cold / Runny Nose
Few younger children can effectively blow their nose and wash hands afterwards. A child with thick or constant nasal discharge should remain home until clear to avoid spreading illness to others.
Vomiting/Diarrhea A child should be free of vomiting/diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
Strep Throat
Notify office. A child is contagious until he/she has been on antibiotics for 24 hours. Child should remain home for 24 hours of treatment and until feeling better.
Lice
Notify office. Child may return to school after lice treatment
Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
Notify office. Child may return to school 24 hours after treatment has begun. No discharge from the eyes.
The 24 hour test
A child should stay home for at least 24 hours if the following symptoms are present the morning of school or the previous night:
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Fever 100+
  • Itchy or reddened eyes with discharge (see Dr)
  • Unusual rash (see Dr.)
  • A poor night sleep due to illness, cough, etc.
Reminder: Children may not keep medication of any kind with them during the school day.
See 'Medications at School' policy below.
MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
Students are prohibited from having medication of any kind with them during the school day or from bringing into the classroom. If your child requires medication to be administered, please stop by the school office to complete the Authorization to Administer Medication Release Form.
ALL medications must be in original packaging, with prescription attached, and/or dosage instructions on the package.  We will not administer Allergy medication at school. Allergy medications should be taken at home prior to coming to school.
Altar Server Training
Grades 4-8
