My Shaker: Lena Paskewitz, Class of 1990
Lena Paskewitz Class of 1990 and daughter Miranda Hervey Class of 2013
Coming Home to Teach and Give Back
Where are you now?
You will find Lena in Room 25 of Fernway Elementary School where she teaches third grade. Lena moved from Missouri in the seventh grade to join our Shaker community. Establishing herself in a completely new environment, she began at Byron Junior High, which became Shaker Middle School the following year. It was in high school that Lena found her way and realized the value of a Shaker education. She was completely self-motivated to apply herself academically and make the most of her high school years as she wanted to do something meaningful as an adult.

Why was teaching in Shaker important?
Lena graduated from Cleveland State University with a degree in education. She was passionate about children and felt that she had the ability to become a strong teacher. After moving back to the Shaker community with her then very young daughters, there was no doubt that she had to teach in Shaker. She was committed to the community and felt she must find her place in the Shaker Schools. Lena was quickly hired as a substitute teacher in Shaker and in the 2000-'01 school year she received her first permanent job as a kindergarten teacher at Mercer Elementary School. Today, she teaches third grade at Fernway Elementary School. As an educator, she strives to teach her students how to be independent thinkers and personally motivated to do their best. She shows them the value of having high standards so they will feel confident to work at their highest level as they mature. We are fortunate to have Lena working with our young students helping them realize their potential in a caring and supportive environment.

A second generation of Shaker graduates
Lena is also extremely proud of her two daughters, Sabrina Paskewitz Drew, Class of 2011, and Miranda Hervey, Class of 2013. They thrived at Shaker enjoying all that it had to offer academically and socially. Sabrina is an Oberlin college graduate and received her master's degree in geography from Ohio University. She now lives and works in the Cleveland area. Miranda recently returned to Shaker after graduating from Berklee College of Music with a degree in performance. In January 2017, she was hired as a long-term substitute music teacher at Boulevard for the remainder of the school year. Now, she is helping with the El Sistema program at Fernway and pursuing a master's degree at Case Western Reserve University in music education.

We gratefully acknowledge Lena's tremendous commitment to our Shaker community and schools and wish her continued success as she prepares our Shaker's young minds for the future.

My Shaker is all about you!

Calling all MAC Scholars
This is an important message for you!
MAC Scholars: Wesley Smith, Joshua McElroy, David Pendleton, and Arlin Hill with
advisors Mary Lynne McGovern, and Hubert McIntyre (second from right)

As a former MAC Scholar, it is more than likely that Mary Lynne McGovern played a significant role in your life: a trusted advisor, a mentor, and a friend. Mrs. McGovern, known to many of you affectionately as "Mama MAC," has announced her plans to retire at the end of the 2017-18 school year, after 27 years at Shaker Heights High School with the MAC Scholars program.  No one will be able to fill her shoes (her very stylish shoes), but the MAC Scholars will continue to thrive thanks to her stewardship and vision.

Mary Lynne has served continuously as an advisor to the MAC Scholars program since it was founded by a group of Shaker Heights High School students in 1990.

To help us honor Mary Lynne's legacy with the MAC Scholars, we are asking you to provide us with your current contact information by clicking here so that we may stay in touch regarding plans to celebrate her retirement. We also ask that you share this news with other Scholars so we can find as many Scholars as possible.

Stay tuned for more details!  We are asking for your fond recollections, tributes and any photos you may wish to share for the occasion! Please contact Holly Coughlin at 216-295-4325.

Say Goodnight Gracie
Many thanks to the SHHS Class of 1967 for introducing George Burns to our community on September 15!  As part of their reunion activities, classmate Alan Safier performed as George Burns in Say Goodnight Gracie, the Tony-nominated solo actor play by Rupert Holmes.  Earlier in the day, Mr. Safier met with the High School's acting and senior ensemble classes to share some of his experiences as an actor.  Proceeds of the performance will benefit the Shaker Schools Foundation's Legacy Fund. It was a great day!
