From the Rector
Does God have any standards at all? Jonah would like to know. Among the nasty enemies of ancient Israel, the Ninevites were the most ruthless. They butchered nations from India to Egypt; destroyed small people groups; annihilated 10 tribes of Israel; and for more than 300 years, they prospered. So when Jonah, against his will, does what God puts him up to, calls them to repent
and they do, he sticks a finger in the back of his throat.
Is God such a soft touch that he falls for a single pious gesture? What's the point of living your life aiming to please God if you can spend your whole career stepping on people to prosper materially, then please him with an eleventh-hour repentance? If you can serve your own interests rather than God's until the last minute, isn't that more economical? Questions are welcomed here. These are among them.
See you in church,
Fr Ellsworth

The Rector reflects on the
2018 Stewardship
Campaign
:
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
GET MEAN
I
n the year 2017, we have had 170 pledging households at St Stephen's, giving a total of $599,266. That makes the average pledge -
the mean
- $3,525. The mean is skewed high by a short list of top givers, so perhaps a more accurate snapshot of the people in our pews would be the median. Very well, then: the
median pledge at St Stephen's is $1,520. That's enough dough, in a year's time, to buy a daily Chai Latté 'dirty', the shot of espresso cutting the sweetness. I had my first one, on the house, the other day, at
Peet's Coffee in our cathedral. Delicious, but I digress.
If you're on the short list, thank you for being generous, and keep looking
up! If you've never pledged before, I ask you: Please make 2018 the year you begin. And if you're below a number and think you could be well beyond either the mean or the median, use them as a benchmark. If you're below the median, aim to surpass it. If you've achieved the median but not yet the mean,
get mean.

Adult Education
This Sunday
Make sure to visit the St Michael and All Angels Fair tables in Kimball Hall, pick up some treats, update your address for the new online directory, then join Karl Belgum in the Conference Room for the first in a series of discussions on the "wisdom books" of the Bible.
These are the books that do not constitute either gospel or part of the story of the history of Israel. Instead they talk about "how to live the good (or wise) life." Job, Psalms, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.
The King James version of Ecclesiastes has been declared by one writer as one of the jewels of 17th century literature. Come be part of this discussion this Sunday.

On Sundays following the 10 AM service from 11:15 until 11:45, John Hirten leads music with children ages 6 to 12. The main goal is to help them learn to participate in the Sunday church experience. In the process, they will also learn basic music reading skills and how to work as a group. We will meet downstairs in the large classroom (at the piano). The plan is to have them sing during the service once a month with the adult choir. Come on down!
