ROSH HASHANAH CHECKLIST

Wednesday, September 20, 2017 - 29 Elul 5777 Erev Rosh Hashanah:

*Some people follow a custom to fast until noon
*Extended selichos are recited
*We do not sound the shofar to distinguish between the shofar blasts of elul and the obligatory shofar blasts on rosh hashanah
*We recite hataras nedarim, annulment of vows, after shachris service. We form batei din to facilitate this mitzvah. If one missed erev rosh hashanah, it can be performed during eseres yemei teshuvah.
*We take haircuts and bathe in honor of yom tov. It is customary for men to go to the mikveh (not before one hour before midday) so as to enter the yom hadin, Day of Judgement, in a state of holiness and purity.

*We prepare an eiruv tavshilin (which allows us to cook and bake on Friday, 2nd day yontif, for the needs of shabbos.
It is also a good idea to arrange an eiruvei chatzeros (to allow carrying from a building's common areas to your apartment and from apartment to apartment)

*We light candles in honor of yom tov and recite two blessings, l'hadlik ner shel yom tov and shechiyanu .

Wednesday evening, September 20, 2017 -
1 Tishrei 5778, Rosh Hashanah Eve:

*Special insertions are made throughout the eseres yemei teshuvah, Ten Days of Repentance, in the shemone esrai , silent devotion.
*On the first night of Rosh Hashanah, after services, we bless each other with the words, "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year!" The Vilna Gaon omits the word, " sealed ," from the blessing.
*To symbolize a sweet year, we dip challah and a piece of apple in honey and partake of the symbolic foods as forms of prayer for a prosperous and successful new year.
Thursday, September 21, 2017 - 1 Tishrei 5778, Rosh Hashanah 1st Day:
*Some have the custom to wear a kittel on rosh hashanah
*We hear 100 blasts of the shofar (at an absolute minimum, 30 blasts) from an expert shofar blower who is (ideally) a Torah scholar and entirely familiar with the numerous and intricate laws of shofar blowing.
*One may not interrupt with speech during the 30  shofar blasts. Ideally, one should not interrupt during the entire 100 blasts
*After mincha, the custom is to go to a river and recite tashlich

Thursday evening, September 21, 2017 -
2 Tishrei 5778, Rosh Hashanah 2nd Day:

*We light candles with the shechiyanu blessing. It is proper for women to wear a new garment or display a new fruit at candle lighting so the bracha applies to these items as well.
*During kiddush, we wear a new garment or place a new fruit on the table so the shechiyanu at the end of kiddush applies to these as well.

Friday, September 22, 2017 - 2 Tishrei 5778
Rosh Hashanah 2nd Day:

*We repeat yesterday's service and hear 100 blasts of the shofar.

*It is advisable for the shofar blower to wear a new garment on the 2nd day so the shechiyanu recited on the shofar applies to the garment as well.

Dear members and friends,

Some of you are away for Yom Tov visiting family and friends.

Many will return to our beloved shul for yom kippur and sukkos holiday and I look forward to davening and celebrating together as a Kehilla.

But we will sorely miss your company during rosh hashanah!

In case I don't see you in person, allow me to offer you a special blessing.

As we approach Rosh Hashana and a new year we daven for myriad things, including spiritual growth and material prosperity for every member of Klal Yisroel.

Ohav Sholom is recognized as an engaged community concerned with what matters most to our People: Torah, Chesed, Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael.

It is my hope that we pursue these goals in the upcoming year with renewed vigor and purpose.

May YOU be blessed with a sweet year of incredible personal success, robust health and arichus yamim v'shanim , long life for you and your entire extended family!

Shana Tova U'metuka!
