  Climate Ready Communities

Is your community 'climate ready'?

The City of Marion is partnering with other Councils and organisations on an initiative to better prepare our community for the risks and emergencies associated with climate change.

The Resilient South Aware and Adapt Project is a new community engagement initiative being developed with the Red Cross to empower people and build resilience and emergency preparedness. The project will be piloted with the four Resilient South councils over the next two years and aims to develop a model that identifies the best ways to engage communities about risk and climate change that can be replicated across other South Australian regions. This project will take an integrated approach that embeds risk communication within a broader conversation about climate change, and in particular, what actions can individuals and communities take for themselves.

A Project Reference Group will be formed comprising representatives from the following organisations to provide oversight of the project:

·     Resilient South Councils (City of Mitcham, City of Onkaparinga, City of Marion, City of Holdfast Bay)
·     DEWNR - Natural Resources Adelaide & Mt Lofty Ranges
·     Australian Red Cross Emergency Services
·     Community representation

This project will support the Resilient South Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan and address actions from the Southern Region Local Government Implementation plan 2015-2019.

Climate Change Contemporary Artists Residency

An exciting opportunity is available for artists to respond creatively to climate change in partnership with the City of Onkaparinga. Each year, at Sauerbier House, the City of Onkaparinga offers eight site-responsive artist in residency (AiR) occupancies to selected contemporary artists working in any medium. As a new endeavour, in 2018-19, two of the successful artists will have the unique opportunity to be embedded within the Sustainability Team. Council has been working for many years to prepare for changes to our climate, and the artists will be supported to collaborate with diverse staff including senior strategic planners, engineers, community relations staff, natural resource managers, and biodiversity specialists.

Staff will help translate the technical data used to plan for climate change such as urban heat mapping, flood mapping, 3D coastal modelling, tree canopy mapping and more. The way the data is currently mapped is surprisingly beautiful in its own right and council staff are excited about sharing it with artists, exchanging ideas, learning from each other, and discovering how the artists will respond. All residencies conclude with a supported exhibition hosted at Sauerbier House.

Expressions of Interest are open until 27 October 2017 and the residencies are programmed to begin in July 2018. For more information on how to apply visit  http://www.onkaparingacity.com/onka/discover/arts_culture/sauerbier_house_culture_exchange.jsp
