Health and Resilience: The Psychological Harm of Anti-Immigrant Policies WEBINAR

TODAY at 11am

As NAMI California strives to become a stronger organization, we have made diversity and inclusion one of our strategic priorities . We recognizes that NAMI CA's growth and strength depend upon our ability to meaningfully engage and empower all communities. As our work moves forward we will focus on engaging diverse communities and strive to reach individuals from all of our communities. We will continue to engage and reach those affected by mental illness through support groups, training, educational sessions and advocacy.

In order to help our communities thrive, discussions around mental health awareness, models of wellness and resources must be made available for all.

You are welcome to join this very important conversation, hosted by the California Immigrant Health Network, this webinar will provide an opportunity to listen and learn from directly impacted people, identify mental health services available to California immigrants, and learn about models of care to address the mental and physical well-being of immigrants.

NAMI CA Family & Diverse Training Surveys

NAMI CA is preparing the 2017/2018 Training Schedule for Family trainings (F2F, Basics, Homefront, and FSG) and Diverse trainings (Peer-to-Peer, Persona a Persona, Mental Health 101, De Familia a Familia, and Conexion). In this current contract, the objective is to specifically reach diverse audiences through the Peer-to-Peer program.

We would like to hear feedback from the affiliates to find out which training programs are most needed and in what areas. The links for both surveys are located below. We will also send the links directly through email to affiliate Presidents and Executive Directors as well. Also included below our tips from NAMI CA and NAMI National on how to recruit for program leaders.

NAMI Advocacy Alert: Health Reform Bill

Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) just introduced a new bill that is even more dangerous for people living with mental illness.

With any health reform bill, NAMI asks the simple question , "Will Americans have more mental health coverage and better care?" With the Graham-Cassidy bill, the answer is unequivocally no.

While it is being promoted as offering more flexibility, their bill will make it harder for people to get psychiatric medications, case management, and mental health services-and other people with mental illness will lose their coverage entirely.

The Graham-Cassidy Bill:
  • Allows states to drop the requirement to cover mental health care. Today, Exchange plans are required to cover essential health benefits, which include treatment for mental health and substance use conditions. Under this bill, each state will have the freedom to drop or change these requirements, putting mental health benefits at risk.
  • Shifts Medicaid funding to a "per capita cap" system.Shifting to per capita cap funding (a fixed amount of funding per person) may sound reasonable, but would not keep up with growth in costs and needs. This will force states to cut Medicaid services and eligibility, which will harm children and adults with mental illness.
  • Effectively ends Medicaid expansion. One in three people covered by Medicaid expansion plans lives with a mental health or substance use condition. Under this bill, Medicaid expansion will be converted to a smaller, temporary block grant that states could use for health coverage or any other health purpose, with no guarantee of mental health coverage.
  • Reduces help to purchase health insurance. Block grants will provide a fixed amount of temporary federal funding to replace insurance subsidies, severely cutting federal help for people to buy insurance. This will leave many people unable to afford the coverage they need for mental health treatment.
Tell your members of Congress vote NO on the Graham-Cassidy Bill.
