Message from the Head of School

When I worked in early childhood education, we found that the most developmentally appropriate way to teach Rosh Hashanah was as the world's birthday. As such, classes would make birthday cakes and decorations alongside the traditional apples, honey and shofar blasts. As we look at this new year, we recognize an important birthday in our community, the 36th year of Yavneh Day School. Read more.. .

High Holiday Reminders
Rosh Hashana
Tashlich: Wednesday, September 20th
We mark Rosh Hashana by observing a model Tashlich ceremony. Traditionally observed on the afternoon of the first day of Rosh Hashana, tashlich is a ceremony in which we symbolically cast off our misdeeds from the previous year by tossing bread crumbs into a body of water. At Yavneh, on the day before we close for Rosh Hashana, we do this ceremony with our buddy classes at the Los Gatos Creek. We discuss and share reflections on our actions from the past year that we want to wash away and we set goals for the year ahead. Parents are welcome.

Yom Kippur
Wear White: Friday, September 29th
In preparation for Yom Kippur, we wear all white on the day before we close for the holiday. This custom comes from the tradition that many people wear a kittel, an all-white garment, on Yom Kippur. It symbolizes purification and transformation, two essential themes of Yom Kippur.

Teshuvah Carnival: Friday, September 29th
The days in between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are called Aseret Yamei Teshuvah - the 10 Days of Repentance (turning toward being a better person). During this time, we focus on doing acts of Tefillah (prayer), Tzedakah (righteous giving), and Teshuvah (repentance). Middle school students create and host a carnival that enables the rest of the student body to perform meaningful acts of teshuvah, tzedakah and tefillah.

After Care:
Ha'Maodon/Club J is available for after care from  12:15pm -  3:30pm on Sep. 29th

Students in Action
Gan Rimon has been learning about the life cycle of apples and making predictions about how many seeds are inside different apples and whether or not apples of various sizes would float when placed in a bowl of water. Morah Nira read a book in Hebrew about bees and honey, and students had the opportunity to see and taste a piece of honeycomb. They noticed the honeycomb is made of hexagon shaped cells. Just like the bees work together, Gan had fun working together to make a replica honeycomb with hexagon shaped blocks.
Kitah Alef Tamar and Alef T'enna went apple picking today.  Kitah Alef Tamar is designing and building a post office for their classroom. They have been learning about maps and writing Rosh Hashana cards in both Hebrew and English.
For Science, Kitah Bet is learning about insects. During STEAM and Environmental Science they are building insect hotels that will be placed outside in our garden area. Stay tuned!
Kitah Gimel baked apple cake using the apples they picked during their field trip. There were plenty of fractions in action during measuring, and there will be more in  evidence when they use apple sections (and honey) in math class.
Keshet of Kavod 2017-2018
The 8th grade Keshet Krew revealed the new Keshet of Kavod values with the accompanying poster.  On Monday morning's Keshet of Kavod assembly, the students performed a skit to teach the student body about the first value of the year,  Netzach , which means  Perseverance .
