Martin Luther - Reformer, Revolutionary,
Religious Scholar

A Note From Pastor Linda

I ask that people make no reference to my name; let them call themselves Christian, not Lutherans... How then should I-poor stinking maggot-fodder that I am-come to have people call the Children of Christ by my wretched name? Not so, my dear friends; let us abolish all party names and call ourselves Christians. ~Martin Luther

Dear Friends in Christ,

Hosanna LUTHERAN Church- what does it mean to call ourselves LUTHERAN? Who was Martin Luther and why do we claim his name? This year marks the 500th anniversary of the REFORMATION- that is, the re-formation of the church. It all began with a young man named Martin Luther who struggled with the questions: Am I a good person- and- What must I do to earn God's favor? These questions led Luther on a quest of identity that resulted in an entire church denomination being named after him. Want to know more? A few opportunities to join me:
Martin Luther- the Idea that Changed the World
A split screening on Wednesdays, September 20 and 27- from 6:30-7:30pm
500 years ago, Martin Luther triggered a seismic upheaval that rocked the western world in the 1500s- with an impact that continues to reverberate to this day. This film tells the great adventure story of his life. At the same time it examines his quest for truth- questions we all must face- including "Who am I?" "What is my purpose?" and "How do I get right with God?"

Martin Luther on Trial- at the Pantages Theather on November 11 at 8pm (Ticket cost $50-$70)
Lucifer, Hitler, Freud, M.L. King Jr., Pope Francis and Katie Von Bora in a courtroom drama for the ages! A trial for the soul of Martin Luther . . . and the prosecutor is the Devil. In the new original play, Luther's beloved wife Katarina defends him as witnesses including Sigmund Freud, Rabbi Josel, St. Paul, and Pope Francies take the stand. Even as 2017 marks 500 years since Luther ignited the Protestant Revolt against Rome, he continues to spark intense debate. You be the judge in this witty, provocative exploration of one of history's most explosive personalities and the religious and political controversies he unleashed.
Tickets will be purchased for the group on Thursday, September 21 at 8am. Contact me here

Beer and Hymn Sing- a spirited sing along! October 1 at Stella's from 7-9pm
Did you know that Luther was a hymn writer? From A Mighty Fortress is Our God- the battle hymn of the Reformation. It is based on Psalm 46 and expresses Luther's heart, helping him over come his fears. To Christmas hymns like To Shepherds As They Watched By Night and From Heaven Above to Earth I Come. Together we will raise our glasses (of whatever kind of beverage you prefer) and sing out loud, led by Charlie O, Rob and Laura Anderson and the worship team. The event is a fundraiser for the Lakes Area FMC MobilePack. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Purchase them here or at church.

Living Lutheran Together!

Bible Night
Wednesday, September 20, 2017

Celebrated in the September, this milestone recognizes the exciting step children take as they enter Faith Formation (Hosanna's version of Sunday school on Wednesday Nights). Preschoolers who are beginning their first full year of  Faith Formation will experience a special blessing and will receive their own SPARK Story Bible. Those elementary aged kids who have not received a SPARK Story Bible are invited to participate.
As children become independent readers, it is a natural time to fulfill the baptismal promise to place the scriptures into their hands. Children and their families will learn some basics about the Bible, as well as ways to incorporate the Bible in daily readings and family devotions through this special workshop. Parents will present the Bible to their child(ren) in worship.
