  Homecoming September 28-October 1
Alumni Award Winners To Be Honored

During Homecoming weekend, North Carolina Wesleyan will recognize an elite group of alumni on Friday evening, September 29 at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts. This group of distinguished alumni were nominated by fellow alumni, faculty and staff based on their personal accomplishments, achievements in business, continued financial support of the College, as well as their outstanding loyalty and service to their alma mater. The winners will be recognized prior to the Dunn Center show, The Unexpected Boys and afterwards at a dessert reception.

The Alumni Achievement Award is presented to a recent graduate of not more than ten years of alumni status who has already made a significant achievement in society.  The 2017 co-recipients are Josh Cain '08 and Quinderra Spellman '09.  Josh has been employed by the American Red Cross since July 2012 and is now one of seven division managers in the nation.  He serves as the Mid-Atlantic Division Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Manager.  Josh currently serves as Vice President of the NC Wesleyan College Alumni Association Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Board's Alumni Relations Committee.  Quinderra Spellman '09 had a stellar football career from 2005-2008 while he was a student at Wesleyan.  He was the 2005 USA South Conference Rookie of the Year, a four-year All Conference selection on the defensive line and also garnered All-Region accolades.  In 2010 Quinderra joined the NC Wesleyan football coaching staff and helped guide NCWC to a pair of conference titles in 2009 and 2010.  He is now the Director of the Shelton Leadership Challenge, a week-long camp for students in grades 9-12 based off of General Hugh Shelton's values-based leadership principles and traits of honesty, integrity, compassion, social responsibility and diversity.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to alumni with more than ten years of alumni status who meet one or more of the following criteria:  outstanding service to the College over a period of years; personal accomplishments that enhance the prestige of the College; and/or distinguished service or accomplishment in their field. 2017 co-recipients for the Distinguished Alumni Award are Tom '70 and Julia '71 Fredericks and Dr. Jeffrey Shelton '69.  Tom graduated from Wesleyan in 1970 and his wife, Julia, in 1971.  Tom attended graduate school at Penn State University where he received his masters degree in the administration of city government and went on to be the assistant city manager with the city of Winston-Salem.  After graduation Julia went on to enjoy thirty-one years with Wachovia Bank.  Before retiring, Julia served as the Operations Supervisor, overseeing ten branches.  In recent years, Tom and Julia have enjoyed traveling and regularly volunteering at the Reynolda Gardens in Winston-Salem, NC.  Tom previously served as president of the Alumni Board,  The Fredericks had an influential role in the creation of the Nu Gamma Phi scholarship fund for NC Wesleyan students.  Dr. Jeffrey Shelton '69 is founder and operator of the Shelton Family Mediation Service which serves the areas of Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and the surrounding Virginia areas.  As a professional family mediator, Dr. Shelton specializes in helping couples create separation agreements and parenting plans.  Because of the sensitive nature of this work and the emotional strain couples experience, Dr. Shelton has worked tirelessly in a career spanning 40 years to help couples discuss their plans in a non-threatening environment and to move forward in ways that will best meet the needs of both the couple and their children.  In addition to his career as a mediator, Dr. Shelton is a long time member of the NC Wesleyan College Alumni Association and serves as a member of the Association's Board of Directors.  He also chairs the Committee on Internships and Mentoring.  He has been a generous and frequent donor to his alma mater.

The Wesleyan Family Award honors one family that has demonstrated special loyalty to the College over more than one generation.  Examples of such loyalty might include:  mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, or other family members attending Wesleyan; families who have been excellent financial supporters of the College over more than one generation; or a combination of the above.  The 2017 Wesleyan Family Award recipients are Jim and Sheila Martin, Jim Pittman '92 and his wife, Janie Mac Pittman and Jan Pittman Robillard '94 and her husband, Andrew Robillard.  Jan Pittman Robillard and Jim Pittman, as siblings, have both been exceptional alumni of the College having donated their time as co-chairs of the Day for Wesleyan campaign and members of the Alumni Association and are faithful donors to the College.  Jim, Vice President of Premier Warehousing, played baseball while a student at Wesleyan.  Jan is the Vice President of Client Services at Jolley Asset Management, LLC and was a cheerleader and active in organizations and her sorority while at Wesleyan.  Their mother, Sheila Martin, has been a longtime supporter of the College as a parent who chose to send her two children to the college and as a longtime donor and Wesleyan Society member with her husband, Jim Martin.  Sheila is a dedicated and recognized staff member of NC Wesleyan as the Executive Director of the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.  As a family, the Martins, Pittmans and Robillards have been faithful members of the Bishop family dedicating their time and resources to better NC Wesleyan.  For generations, they have actively participated as leaders in the community as well as beacons for NC Wesleyan.

Wesleyan Tops 1,000!

North Carolina Wesleyan has surpassed the 1,000th student milestone with approximately 1,040 traditional students starting classes on August 23.

The College is riding a four-year momentum of large incoming classes under the leadership of President Dewey Clark, as well as increased retention of students into their sophomore year. The 1,040 headcount is an 8% increase over fall 2016 enrollment of 960.

We are right on pace with our strategic enrollment plan, stated President Clark, "We will continue to expand our prospective student pool through new academic programs, athletic teams, and extracurricular activities such as ROTC, intramurals, and music programs."

In the last year, Wesleyan has added women's lacrosse, men's cross country; reinstated a robust ROTC program, and added four new majors (Business Administration with a concentration in Logistics, Organizational Administration with a concentration in Leadership, Communication, and Health Promotion) and six new minors (Cybercrime, music production, Hispanic studies, sports administration, leadership, and logistics).  Read more.
