Parents and Guardians,
Last Wednesday, we had the opportunity to host representatives from over 140 colleges at our annual Fall College Fair. The event took place during the school day and students were provided a time to visit with the college representatives and ask about their school, majors, and other information they might be interested in. Our College and Career Counselors organize this event as part of the college education experience for LHS students of all grades, and will provide many opportunities for students to connect with college representatives throughout the year. You and your student can stay up to date with college representative schedules as well as other college information through your student's Naviance account.
I want to share some fantastic news about five LHS students who were recently named 2018 National Merit Semi-Finalists. Grant Dennis, Noah Johnson, Bretton Laboret, Clay Parker, and Brandon Su all earned that distinction for their performance on the PSAT test last year. The National Merit Semi-Finalist distinction is awarded to students who scored in the top 1% out of approximately 1.6 million 11th graders who took the exam last year. Congratulations to these young men and their families!
This Friday, LHS will have our first Early Release Day of the school year. On each of our early release days, students will go to class periods 1-4 and all students will begin lunch at 12:15 pm. Buses will run at 1:00, but students who have alternate transportation will be allowed to leave at 12:15 when lunch begins.
Friday is also our Leopard Friday community event. Festivities will begin at 5:00 in the LHS Courtyard, and there will be something for everyone as our student organizations, clubs, and community groups provide a fun and carnival-type atmosphere for both kids and adults.
We will end the event with a community pep rally at 6:30 in the LHS Courtyard, and all Leopard fans are invited to meet on the field to form a spirit line just prior to kick off of the football game against Highland Park.
A BBQ dinner will be catered by Sonny Bryan's as a high school fundraiser in the LHS cafeteria that evening. If you would like to purchase tickets you can do that through our online payment center at:
https://lovejoy.revtrak.net/leopard-friday-bbq-dinner/
.
The deadline for purchasing tickets is
Wednesday, September 20, 2017
. A small number of tickets will be sold at the door.
I look forward to seeing you on Friday. Have a great week.
Sincerely,
Chris Mayfield Principal Lovejoy High School

Hurricane Relief
In light of the devastation caused by Harvey, Anthony Tang (LHS Senior) is leading the way to help those affected by the hurricane. From sorting toothbrushes to organizing fundraising drives in the district, Anthony has been doing anything he can to help the cause.
Anthony, a senior at Lovejoy High, first learned of the traumatic impacts of the storm when he contacted a childhood friend who lives in Houston. "My buddy's family was fortunately not severely affected because his house is on higher ground, but many other houses in surrounding neighborhoods were flooded and ruined. I can't imagine the troubles those families are facing, but I want to help in any way I can." Anthony has reached out and partnered with Trusted World and Salvation Army and has delivered boxes of donations to be transported from their warehouses. "It makes me smile to see how genuinely cooperative people are in this time of need. Everyone I have worked with seems so willing to help."
Anthony is requesting the help of fellow Leopards. There is a need for clothes and shoes, especially for youth. Other supplies in need include Adult X-Large T-Shirts and undergarments, as well as Women's Sports-bras. If you wish to donate supplies or help pack donations to support this cause, please contact Anthony at:
[email protected]
.
Thanks from the Visual Art Department
The show and fundraiser were a huge success, with the students raising $2,854.00 to aid hurricane relief efforts through the sale of their work.
If you did not get a chance to attend the opening last night, feel free to come by the gallery during school hours from now until October 10th to peruse the INCREDIBLE work that the AP Studio artists put into this exhibition. We could not be more proud of their willingness to give of themselves, their time, and their work to help others. Thank you from all of us in Lovejoy Visual Art for supporting our artists and their efforts to give back.
