The Ohio State Global One Health initiative and global partners will lead the 4th biannual International Congress on Pathogens at the Human Animal Interface (ICOPHAI) in Doha, Qatar from November 7-9, 2017 at The Ritz Carlton. This year's conference "Environmental Challenges and Impact on Global Health" has already seen a 30% increase in abstract submissions over previous years.

Global One Health Is a Registered NGO in Ethiopia - Ceremony November 11, 2017
|
The Global One Health initiative will officially celebrate the opening of its regional office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and its registration as a non-governmental organization (NGO) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 11. The process to become an NGO has taken over a year of hard work on the part of the GOHi and Ohio State Global Gateway team, and everyone's support is greatly appreciated.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will include a workshop featuring the breadth and impact of GOHi's work to date and the upcoming planned activities in the region. It will also host the signing of international Memorandum of Agreements with seven partner institutions including, Addis Ababa University (AAU), Gondar University (UoG), Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), National Animal Health Diagnostic and Investigation Center (NAHDIC), University of Nairobi (UoN), Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania).

Kayleigh Gallagher to Join GOHi Columbus Office
|
Kayleigh Gallagher has joined the Global One Health initiative to provide administrative support to the Columbus office. She brings extensive administrative experience to the team.
Gallagher previously worked with the College of Nursing to support its Office of Global Innovations, and was involved with the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship program assisting the Center for African Studies.
Before working for Ohio State, Gallagher worked closely with immigrant and refugee populations in Columbus. She supported newly arrived families during their resettlement period and coordinated academic enrichment programs for immigrant and refugee youth.
She holds a bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University and is a graduate student in the Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics master's program.

GOHi Builds Partnerships in Brazil
|
A GOHi delegation recently participated in the Global Innovation Initiative (GII) workshop in João Pessoa, Brazil, October 18 - 20. There were over 100 scientists in attendance including those from Mexico, Brazil, United States, United Kingdom, Argentina and Chile.
The Federal University of Paraíba and GOHi took the lead in planning and organizing the workshop, while the Federal University of Paraíba served as the lead local organizer. The workshop included presentations on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and optimizing genomic technologies to further identify, prevent and treat AMR.
In addition to the GII workshop, GOHi faculty and staff along with the Ohio State Brazil Gateway staff, participated in multiple collaboration meetings with multidisciplinary leaders from the University of
Paraíba, Federal University of São Paulo, São Paulo Research Foundation, National Institute of Research in Antimicrobials Resistance and Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul to discuss further One Health opportunities in Brazil.
Additional Activities in Brazil
- Wondwossen Gebreyes, DVM, PhD, GOHi executive director, gave a plenary presentation at the 29th Brazilian Society of Microbiology Congress in Iguasu Falls. In addition, Gebreyes and GOHi's strategic partners from Brazil participated in the Brazilian Antimicrobial Resistance network retreat.
- The University of São Paulo (USP) leadership, Provost Raul Machado Neto, hosted Gebreyes and convened a panel discussion. This multi-disciplinary One Health team of scientists and Provost Machado unanimously decided to establish a USP-Global One Health initiative.
- A meeting with the São Paulo Foundation (FAPESP) leadership focused on continued growth of the partnership between Ohio State and São Paulo.
There is a great deal momentum around One Health in Brazil, and a clear interest in establishing a strong initiative that serves Brazilian communities that is supported and synergized with GOHi.

Global One Health initiative Awarded $1.25 Million NIH Grant
|
The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) was awarded a $1.25 million (direct costs)
Fogarty Global Health Training Program grant from the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is the second NIH grant awarded to GOHi, which will be used to support One Health Eastern Africa Research and Training (OHEART) programs over the next five years.
GOHi partners with four institutions in Eastern Africa to provide sustainable One Health training and capacity building to advance biologic and economic health in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

Gondar University is awarded top national Ethiopian academic awards of recognition
GOHi's partner in One Health has been named the number one university in Ethiopia for the second year and has also received the Ethiopian Quality Award. Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn, academic vice president, received the QualityAaward on behalf of UoG and the community.
Dr. Desalegn Mengesha, president, University of Gondar said, "With the current investments in staff and infrastructure development, it can be observed that UoG, without a doubt, is setting an exceptional standard, which can be an example for other universities. In addition to this, UoG, Ethiopia's top ranked educational institution, believes that paving a way towards better research quality and advanced research will be key moving forward."

The Mini-Grant for Conference Participation is an opportunity for Hosts and Fellows to jointly present on research related to their CADFP fellowship at an international conference. Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund (ABCF) Fellowship
The purpose of the Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund (ABCF) fellowship is to develop capacity for agricultural biosciences research in Africa, to support research for development projects that contribute towards increasing food and nutritional security and/or food safety in Africa, and to facilitate access to the BecA-ILRI Hub facilities by African researchers and their partners. The fellowships are offered to applicants with innovative ideas for short to medium term research projects (up to 12 months) aligned with national, regional or continental agricultural development priorities and CGIAR research for development strategies.
Trainees in programs may be interested in the ABCF fellowship program through the BecA-ILRI Hub in Nairobi. There are some
eligibility requirements related to university-type and research topic.
Call for students to serve on Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) Trainee Advisory Committee
The CUGH committee is composed of trainees from undergraduate and graduate levels in any discipline (medical and non-medical) who have an interest in global health. It works to bring the trainee voice and perspective to the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) in order to advance CUGH's mission to improve the well-being of people around the world through research, education, service and advocacy. This is an excellent opportunity to advance issues important to students within CUGH. Application deadline is November 8.
