About the Presenter
Mel Sussman – McREL International
Mel comes to McREL International with 38 years of experience in public education as a classroom teacher, magnet program coordinator, and building level administrator. Prior to joining the McREL team, he served as an assistant principal for Edison Schools in Denver and as a Middle School principal in the Weld RE1 School District. Prior to his transition to Colorado, Mel served as an assistant principal in the Pottsgrove School District in Pennsylvania. In the classroom, Mel served as a communications technology program coordinator at Franklin Learning Center High School in the School District of Philadelphia. Mel has served as an adjunct journalism instructor at Temple University and as supervisor of student teachers at the University of Northern Colorado. He provides professional development and technical assistance in a range of topics, including school level leadership, instructional approaches for English language learners, and literacy.

Change is constant in schools: Every new program, policy, or procedure comes with the need to implement and manage change well. Attend this research- and evidence-based session to learn the keys to helping your school team not just survive change, but thrive in it. Participants will also receive extended virtual coaching during 2018-19 school year.
You'll leave this intensive 2-day session with:
- Knowing how to create demand for change, and a shared vision for the future, among your staff and stakeholders.
- Understanding how to estimate the “magnitude” of a proposed change and how it will impact your school community.
- Knowing why and how to adjust your leadership style based on the change at hand, including when it’s critical to be directive (making executive decisions) and when to be empowering (sharing leadership).
- Understanding the four phases of change and how to manage your school’s progress through the phases.
- Knowing what first- and second-order responses to change are and how to support your staff as they go through their personal transitions.
- Sustaining momentum and maintaining consistency.
- Monitoring results and making modifications at key points.
