On October 13, 2017 Members of the State Nominations Review Committee, an advisory board of the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office, voted to recommend that the nomination for listing the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District be forwarded to the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places for his consideration.

The committee’s recommendation was made on Friday, October 13, 2017, during a proposal review meeting and discussion held at the State Historical Society of Iowa Museum in Des Moines. The case for listing the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District was presented by Larry Obermeyer, author of the nomination, and Matt Merk, Sioux City Railroad Museum, executive director. Several museum staff members and volunteers also attended the meeting to show support.
