Principal's Message

We had a number of fun events during the month of October. Thank you to all of the parents and our PTO who helped make these events a success! It was also nice seeing our parents during Parent Teacher Conferences. I look forward to see more of you on November 2nd. Conferences are a great way to communicate student successes and areas of focus. Please continue these conversations throughout the school year so we can best support your efforts at home.

Over the last two weeks students completed our annual bus safety drills. They understand the rules and procedures we have in place to make sure they are safe as they travel to and from school. Please help remind students to make safe choices and to report concerns to the adult on duty. When students are on the bus concerns need to be reported to the driver so the situation can be handled and monitored at the time of the incident. Thank you for working with us to help keep your students safe at all times.

Thanks for checking out our newsletter and remember you can follow us on twitter @glendeningelem and check out our website at  gocruisers.org/glendeningelementary_home.aspx

It's great to be a Cruiser!

Caring Cruisers: 5th Grade Mediation Program

Having problems with friends? Feeling sad and need to talk to someone?  We have the solution for you!  Caring Cruisers!!  Glendening has started a mediation program with selected 5th grade students who have gone through a screening process and trained to work with all students in a "talk it out" approach.  To speak with a Caring Cruiser, students get a form from the board by the recess doors, fill it out, and put in Ms. Winhoven's office mailbox.  We also offer services to students on the spot when the team isn't working with students.  Caring Cruisers will be in the shelter house during outside recess days, and will walk around the halls during indoor recess.  If the mediators are unable to help resolve the conflict, they will pass on the information to Ms. Winhoven or Mr. Huffman, program advisors to help.  We are hoping our students will learn to talk and work together to come up with an agreed solution without having to ask teachers for intervention.  Of course teachers are always available, but we are hoping this can be an alternate form of resolution if it is something smaller.  Be on the lookout for the students with a lanyard and clip boards who are ready to assist you!

Parents and/or students may now fill out an online form if they wish to request a meeting with our Guidance Counselor, Ms. Winhoven. Go to the Glendening Elementary page (COUNSELING OFFICE) on the left bar. Once on the page, you can then click an icon that says, "Meet with Counselor- Request a Meeting".

K-1 Reading Night

On Tuesday, October 10th Title I held a Reading Night for Kindergarten through 1st grade students, parents, and siblings. We enjoyed our time working with both parents and students to build literacy support. The evening started off with a discussion of tips and trick for parent to use at home while students met in the library to pick 3 books of their own to keep. Students joined their friends for a read aloud then met back up with their parents to share their new books and read with them.

A special thanks to our Title I teachers, Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Phillips for organizing this event.

A special thank you to our parents for your ongoing support.

Readers 2 Leaders

Parents to do you want to help your child become a better reader? We have a book club at Glendening this school year that will supply leveled books to your students. Parents, if you are interested in enrolling your child in the Readers 2 Leaders Book Club complete and submit the form linked below to your child's teacher. The goal of this book club is to partner with parents to improve reading fluency. Students will take books home at their reading level and work with their parents on reading and comprehension. Books can be read over several days and turned back in with the Book Club Log for their next book. You can use the Reading Tips and Tricks listed in the chart below to help your student with reading comprehension.

Google Classroom

Groveport Madison is a Google District which means students have access to Google Apps for Education. One of the apps students at Glendening are using is called Google Classroom. Google Classroom  is a blended learning platform developed by  Google for schools that aims to simplify creating, distributing, and grading assignments in a paperless way. All students in grades 3rd-5th have been assigned to a Google Classroom. While working in Google Classroom students have the ability to work on digital assignments and get written feedback from their teachers on the documents they complete while working at their own pace. Google Classroom also exposes students to career based skills such as typing, organizing files, digitally tracking assignments, and using written communication. Ask your child about Google Classroom and the types of assignments they are completing through the app.

Growth Mindset Quote

"There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs."

Here at Glendening we feel it is important to have a growth mindset. We will share inspirational quotes to keep us focused on reaching higher levels of achievement.

What is a growth mindset? "In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment," Carol Dweck.
