A Note from the Principal...

Fall greetings to the MES Family!  I always look forward to the months of November and December as we focus on the sentiments of thankfulness, good will and generosity.  Thank you for partnering with us to instill these qualities in our students.

As we focus on thankfulness I'm reminded of how fortunate we are to work with such great students and families.  It was great to see so many people at the MES PTO's Jammin' In the Gym event last month.  The goal of the event was to give the MES Family an opportunity to interact with each other, and I think it went really well.  A huge thank you to the PTO for organizing the fun evening.  Let me take this opportunity to encourage you to become an active participant in the PTO by attending a monthly meeting, which is the first Thursday of each month in the MES Library.  Also, watch the calendar and newsletters for upcoming events sponsored by the PTO.  Monday is your next chance to attend an event!  MES Skate Night at Carousel Skate will go from 6:00-8:00 and will be a lot of fun, so plan on attending.  Please note that the skate night was originally advertised as Nov. 9, but it is actually Nov. 6.  Also, be sure to mark your calendars for December 12 when the PTO will host our Holiday Family Movie Night in the MES gym.  I believe they are going to show the 'old school' versions of Frosty the Snowman and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.  There will also be free popcorn and water for all, so plan to bring your lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the fun that evening.

Speaking of fun, the PTO is hard at work preparing for this year's Color Run in April.  They are trying to find sponsors to support the cost of color stations and other expenses associated with the event.  If you know of a business or individual who may be interested, please let the office know.

Our annual cookie dough fund raiser kicked-off yesterday, as you may have noticed the packets coming home.  The sale will run through Wednesday, November 15.  We are simply taking orders during this time, but are not taking payment until the cookie dough arrives Wednesday, December 13 - or Yum Yum Day, as the kids and I call it.  We will have a pick-up event that night so families can deliver orders to the individuals who placed orders.  We will then be collecting the payments through Tuesday, December 19.  I realize the tubs are pricey, but please keep in mind that MES keeps $6 for every tub sold!  Our goal is for each student to sell at least two tubs of cookie dough.

Thank you, in advance, for helping support programs at MES!  We were able to fund the training for our staff in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People this past August due to your hard work and generosity during last year's cookie dough sale.  We would like to take the next step in training our teachers in the Leader In Me, which is an amazing program that will help our teachers better foster leadership qualities in our students.  Everyone has a leader inside of them, and we want MES to be a school that helps all students realize their potential and gifts.  I hope you'll consider helping your students with the cookie dough sale in an effort to raise funds for a fantastic purpose.... doing what is best for kids!  Please give us a call at 722-8230 if you have any questions.

Thank you very much and have a fantastic weekend.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO REMEMBER
Our school day starts at 8:45 am every day.  Students who arrive after 8:50 am will be counted tardy.  If a student is brought late to school the parent must come in the office and sign them in. Students are allowed to enter the building at 8:35 am.  If you need to drop your student off before this time, the YMCA has a latchkey program at MES.  For more information please call the YMCA at 316-264-1610.

The district dismisses students 40 minutes early every Wednesday to accommodate the Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).  The teachers participate in the PLC to discuss curriculum, instructional strategies, data review, technology training, etc.  School is dismissed at 3:20 pm every Wednesday.

Please call the office at 316-722-8230 if your child is going to be absent or if you have a transportation change.  For student safety, please let the office know of a transportation change before 3:00 pm and 2:30 pm on Wednesdays.

If your student is riding a different bus home with a friend, a note is required from both sets of parents.  These can be given to the office for Mr. White to sign and can then be given to the bus driver.

HUDDLE UP

I hope you are all doing well. Students have done a great job during the first 9 weeks of school! We are finishing up an archery unit, bows and arrows were provided by the PTO. The kids have thoroughly enjoyed shooting arrows and learning these new skills.

Coming up in November, kindergartners will be learning about healthy habits. The first and second graders will be learning an additional 4 bones of the body. Third through fifth grade will be learning additional muscles. We are moving into a speed stacking (cup stacking) unit and just finishing up some cooperative games. After that we will be doing some fitness kickboxing routines, and exercises with the Xbox Kinect.

Remember to eat healthy and find ways to get a great workout during the winter cold!

FROM THE NURSE

BEING SICK WITH SEASONAL INFLUENZA IS MISERABLE

Studies show that 4.0% of students aged 5-11 have missed 11 or more days of school in the past 12 months due to illness. Remember a healthy student is better learner.  Nearly 22 million school days are lost each year due to colds alone and 38 million school days are lost each year due to the influenza virus (Infection Prevention eNews).  January is one of the peak "flu season" months. Cases of seasonal influenza are already being reported in Sedgwick County.  The peak of flu season is around the corner.  It is not too late to get vaccinated.   Respiratory illnesses, in addition to seasonal influenza, are common this time of year. Click  here for the differences between a cold and Influenza.  Remember to be vigilant about hand washing, coughing into your sleeve, and contacting your health care provider within 48 hours if signs of Influenza develop. Teach your child to keep his hands away from his face unless they are clean as respiratory and gastrointestinal germs enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth. The Center for Disease Control  recommends that  people who are sick with flu-like symptoms should stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone.  Fever should be gone without the use of a fever reducing medication. Help send the message to your children that school is important, but keep them home for fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and continuous coughing.

COSTUMES NEEDED
Parents,

Now that Halloween 2017 is in the books, if you would like to donate a child's costume to the school please see Mrs. Stephens.  We keep extra costumes for students who forget or do not have access to one for our Fall party days. The student may use the costume and return it before going home on party day.  We are in need of items for older boys - even just accessories are welcome (like a hat).  Thanks!  :)

DON'T FORGET LUNCH MONEY!
USD 266 uses the Skyward Food Service and RevTrak fee payment systems. Please check your email and phone numbers in Skyward, so you may be alerted when your child only has 2 lunches left. Parents receive an email when your child has $5.00 left in their account. Parents receive a 2nd email after your child has 1 lunch left. When your child doesn't have any money into the account-we have your child go to the office and call you. Please put money into the account that day. You will also receive a 3rd email when your child has a zero balance.

Please check with your child if they are eating breakfast at school or getting a 2nd milk-the charges add up quickly. If you have more than one child, please check both lunch accounts. We are not allowed to go into one child's account to pay for a sibling.

Parents may keep as large a balance as they wish in a child's account (for example: $5.00, $10.00, $15.00 or more). If the student doesn't have enough in his/her lunch account to cover a meal, the account will be charged for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk if the student chooses to take one. No meal charges will be allowed.
If you have any questions regarding Skyward and the RevTrak system, please call our school office. We want every child to have a good lunch, every day!
