Celebration of Life Workshop

Hymns? Communion? Soloists? Rite One or Rite Two? Mark or John or just a couple psalms?

Last Sunday we gathered together to talk about how each of us wants our own memorial service to be celebrated.  Fr. Craig led the workshop, complete with packets to reflect on and start this important conversation.  There's a basic information sheet which asks where we want our Celebration of Life, who the church should contact, what we kind of service we want, and where we want to be laid to rest.  These are turned in to the office where I keep a copy in our files and also make a copy for you to take home to put with your "important documents".  I'm also happy to make additional copies if you want loved ones to have a copy.

Beyond the information sheet, there's a form to select readings, music, speakers, and other people you'd like involved in your service.  Our Minister of Music, Emma Riggle, included a helpful handout of hymns that are used for a Celebration of Life.

For those of you who have turned in forms, I have made copies for you to take home - please see me at church at your convenience.  If you are ready to turn in the second packet, I'm happy to make copies of that as well.

If you weren't at the workshop on Sunday but would like a packet, they are in the Common Room near the Flower Chart and Directory basket.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions - this is a living document that can change whenever you want it to.

But as Fr. Craig observed, it's a gift to your loved ones in providing them a direction when you're gone.  For me, the peace of mind of knowing the processional at my service won't be the theme of "Thomas the Tank Engine" is priceless.

Take care,

Sally

From our Treasurer
Bob Howard

Dear friends, it has been a busy summer and autumn for me.  As some of you may know, I put a great deal of time into helping Artichoke Community Music move from their prior location of over 20 years on SE Hawthorne to an exciting new location at 20 th and Powell.  The project required significant improvements to the new property and I managed the permitting, and construction and helped raise the money to complete that project.  We received our final occupancy permit yesterday!  Now that I have reached that milestone, I am turning my attention back to the financial operations of our parish as we begin planning for the coming year.

As promised several weeks ago, I mailed your pledge statements this week to those of you who turned in pledge cards last year for 2017.  The statements are a progress report and meant to give you an understanding of what may be left for the year.  The results reflect donations paid through mid-September.  Please note--the statements are only being mailed to you if you completed a pledge card for the calendar year 2017.  If I did not receive a card, you will not receive a statement--If you believe that you turned in a statement and should receive a statement please let me know!  If you have a question or feel that there may be any inaccuracy, please let me know as well.

You should also know that the pledge statement only includes donations made towards you annual pledge.  Any other donations that you have made throughout the year will be summarized in an annual statement that reflects all donations that you have made at any time during the year.  The annual statement includes any donations made as a pledge, altar guild contributions, memorial contributions donations made in thanksgiving of life events or special people and such.

I am blessed to serve as your treasurer for our community.  We are having a wonderful year that is full of vitality and enthusiasm.  I am so grateful for your support of the artist-in-residence program that has grown so strong this year.  I welcome any feedback.

Sincerely,

From our Minister of Music
Emma Mildred Riggle, M.M.

Dear Parish family,

As Advent draws nearer, I'm looking forward to sharing some special musical experiences with you in the coming weeks. This week, I want to devote my corner of The View to telling you about these opportunities!

On Sunday, November 5 at 9:00 A.M., rehearsals for the Advent Choir will begin. This year, the ladies of our choir will be featured. We'll prepare carols and anthems for this year's 9:00 P.M. Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols service.

Please know that all gentlemen who enjoy singing are also invited to share in the music for Christmas Eve. Though I did not have enough male volunteers to plan for SATB choral music, I would be glad to arrange for solos or small group pieces featuring any gentlemen who wish to sing - just ask! Our small parish is blessed with many fine musicians, and all your contributions are valued!

I would also like to invite all of my Parish family to my SpeakUp! Ascension Talks presentation on November 12 at 9:00 A.M. I'm looking forward to sharing with you about my work as assistant conductor of the Bach Cantata Choir.

Please keep me in your prayers as Advent approaches - a busy yet profound season for liturgical musicians!

Soli Deo gloria,

Reflection

"For me, prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy; finally it is something great, supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus."

If you have a quotation you'd like to suggest for a future Reflection in The View, please email it to Emma Riggle at music@ascensionepiscopalparish.org.
