St. Michael's Academy
  :

I hope everyone is ready for our first round of parent/teacher conferences this Tuesday. This is your opportunity to have 1:1 communication with your child's teacher.  I always suggest to parents that they give some thought to the conference ahead of time and are ready to share any information that they feel might be important for the teacher to know.

Our Scholastic Book Fair starts next week in the gymnasium. Each class will have a turn visiting the Fair. I'm sure there will be many great choices! The Fair will be open on Tuesday during conferences, so please stop by. We are still in need of volunteers. Please see the information below on how to volunteer.

A great big thank you to all of the parents, board members, teachers, and community members who participated in the strategic planning brain storming session last night.  Your input is invaluable as we plan for the future of St. Michael's Academy.  We appreciate you taking the time to be with us last night.

See you on Tuesday.  Have a great weekend.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

Two Giving Opportunities
Let us share what we have  with those who are in need.

# 1 Thanksgving Food Drive

All of us at St. Michael's Academy are joining  together to show our gratitude to God for all that we have by sharing our gifts with those in need.
  • Our canned good collection will begin on November 6th and will end on November 17, 2017.
  •  Our donations will benefit the Gray House.
  • All non-perishable items are appreciated.  Please check expiration dates.
Thank you for your care for others.

# 2 - Hurricane Relief Fundraiser

The student council is sponsoring a fundraiser to help Hurricane Sur vivors in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Florida, and other islands.

The goal is to raise $1,000 to send to Catholic Charities. They will distribute the money to places in the greatest need. We are asking for all families to make a monetary contribution of at least $2.00 so that we can meet this goal. These places were hit hard by the recent hurricanes and as a way of showing appreciation for the good things that God has given to us, we should be generous to those in need. Thank you very much!

Perfect Attendance

Good Attendance Pays Off !

Congratulations to our perfect attendance dress-down winners! In order to qualify for the weekly drawing, a student must have no absences, tardiness or early dismissals the previous week of school. We select one from PreK - 2nd grade, one from 3rd - 5th grade and one from 6th - 8th grade.  Congrats to this week's winners!

Mineral Identification

The students in the sixth grade Earth-Science class having been learning first-hand about minerals, the differences between them and how to identify them.

During the recent activity, the students practiced their team work skills as they worked in groups to identify several different types of minerals. To accomplish the task, they utilized mineral identification tests that included a luster-test, streak-test, hardness-test, and a fracture-test. Some of the minerals they identified were halite, quartz and feldspar.

Needless to say, there is some serious mineralogist potential in this class!

Blizzard Bags

Blizzard Bags Are Coming!
Blizzard Bags - What Are They?

  • "A Blizzard Bag" is a snow day where...
      • You do your school work at home
      • Use your computer or books, pencils, pens, and paper
  • Blizzard Bag assignments are generated by your child's teacher(s) as a continuation, review, or extension of the academic activities being covered in the classroom during the school year. All lessons are student centered and support the learning we do each day.

Samples of grade level Blizzard Bags will be available in the cafeteria for review on Parent/Teacher Conference day.  Stop by and check them out.

THE BEST PART - NO SNOW DAYS TO MAKE UP
AT THE END OF THE YEAR!

Get Your Flu Shot!

Keep your family healthy this fall/winter.

Please consider getting your flu shot. It's not too late. The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for all individuals ages 6 months and older. It takes about two weeks to have full effect after the injection, so if you haven't done so already, consider getting your flu shot as soon as possible! The flu shot along with a healthy diet, good sleep, and frequent hand washing will help us all to stay healthy during these colder months!

Heritage Celebration

SAVE THE DATE!

Save the date for the 2nd annual Family Heritage Celebration! The event will take place on Sunday, January 28, 2019 as part of our Catholic School Week's festivities.  If you haven't already done so, please complete the participation form so we can know how many heritages we need to plan for.  Need another form?  Click here.

Don't miss the fun as we celebrate and learn about and from each other!

All Saints Day

"We Are All Saints"

St. Michael's Academy paid tribute to many of the saints this past Wednesday, All Saints' Day.  We thank Fr. Tom Shea who celebrated Mass with us and reminded us that we always have a friend in Jesus and will always be a part of God's family. In addition, the 5th graders did a great job as readers and altar servers.

Signature Event

Signature Event Fantastic Success!

After more than a year of planning, the SMA Signature Event honoring the 14 original Catholic elementary schools in the city of Springfield, came off without a hitch!  Over 160 guests gathered to reminisce about memorabilia and visit with old friends.

The event is expected to raise over $29,000 and we thank EVERYONE who attended and contributed to its success. We especially thank attendees who supported St. Michael's Academy during the "Raise the Paddle" auction!

What a wonderful evening!  To see additional photos from the event, please click here.
