St. Michael's Academy
  :

I hope the students enjoyed a great day off while the teachers attended professional development. This was a diocesan-wide training day held at St. Thomas School in West Springfield. This year's topic was "The Benefits of Getting Back to Basics in Professional Relationships" given by Psychologist Dr. Patricia Kelley.  It is often helpful to connect with teachers from across the diocese while learning about best practices in education.

If you attended the Back To School Night, you heard about how we will be holding a brainstorming session in order to formulate a new strategic plan for the next five years.  This new plan will address 6 key areas for our school: Catholic Identity, Academics, Enrollment, Advancement, Facilities and Finance.  We have extended an invitation to ALL parents to join us but have only heard from a small group. Please consider attending and contributing your thoughts and ideas that will effect our school for the next five years.  We want to hear from you!  The session will be held on Thursday, November 2nd at 6 p.m.  To pre-register, simply send us an email at [email protected].  Upon receipt, we will send you information in order to prepare you for the evening of brainstorming.

Have a great weekend.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

Living History Museum

Well, it will be here before we know it !!! I am speaking of the Living History Museum of 2017.

As most of you already know, each year the eighth grade presents a Living History Museum, wherein each student chooses either a person of history, or an era in history, and does extensive research into their subject. The only restrictions are that the person or era chosen must be no earlier than 1850, and that, if a person is chosen, that individual had had to have made a meaningful contribution to American History. Once they have completed their research, they prepare a detailed, typewritten, research report, along with a tri-fold display poster and a shoebox display. These are the minimum requirements for the project for each student.
For those students who wish to earn extra credit, there are several other things that they could choose to do. They may choose to attire themselves as their historical person, or as a person of their historical era. They may also want to include with their display artifacts or other things which are indicative of their subject. The latter could include, but not be limited to, music of the period, food of the period, etc.

This year's endeavor promises to be much more interesting than in past years. Unlike previous years, the historical subjects chosen by this year's class are significantly more varied and diverse. For instance, historical eras chosen  include the Great Depression, the Jazz Age, and the Space Race, while personas chosen will include Chief Sitting Bull, Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson, Bill Gates, Wyatt Earp, Walt Disney, and Elvis Presley.

This year's Living History Museum will be held on  November 14th from  6:00 - 7:00 PM, and promises to be a most interesting affair. So, please mark your calendars accordingly. We look forward to seeing you there!

School Mass

School Mass

We would like to send our thanks to Fr. David Darcy from Holy Cross for celebrating Mass with our students this past Wednesday. What a great job our 6th grade students did as readers and altar servers and the choir sounded lovely!

Kindergarten News

A Visit To McCray's Farm

The kindergarten students had a blast on their field trip to McCray's Farm on Thursday!  Each came back with a pumpkin and some good stories to tell. Thank you to all the parents who chaperoned!

 Did You Know?

Dismissal at SMA

Did you know that every student that is dismissed from SMA is under the watchful eye of a member of the faculty?

If you pick your child up in a carline, they are individually called via radio, escorted to their vehicle and a faculty member opens the car door and helps them into their vehicle.  If your child is a walker, a faculty member walks the group to each of the four corners of our campus where they are met with a crossing guard.  If they participate in the after school program, they are supervised by a faculty member.

What other school does that?!

   Trunk or Treat

A Scary Night at SMA!

As the sun set on Thursday night at St. Michael's Academy, hundreds of  ghosts, goblins, witches, super heroes and, of course, princesses filled the night! We are talking about the annual Trunk or Treat event!  Thousands of pieces of candy were handed out as children visited each of the cars and Halloween displays.

Thank you to everyone who decorated and brought their vehicles.  What a fun night!

Blizzard Bags

Blizzard Bags Coming Soon!

Blizzard Bags are coming to St. Michael's Academy! What are blizzard bags you ask?

     - Are you tired of not knowing when the last day of school will be?
     - Are you tired of feeling like the summers get shorter and shorter?
     - Are you tired of worrying about keeping your child busy on a school          snow day?

BLIZZARD BAGS ARE THE ANSWER!!

Many schools in our area are using them. Stay tuned and learn more about how they work in upcoming newsletters!

The Fund for SMA

The 2017-2018 Fund for St. Michael's Academy Challenge -  The Sky is the Limit!

As we enter the 5th year of The Fund for St. Michael's Academy, we would like to thank our dedicated donors who have supported the mission of SMA over the past few years!

The GREAT NEWS is we have been granted a new challenge this year.  An anonymous donor has offered St. Michael's Academy the opportunity to raise funds by challenging us to secure more NEW donors, LAPSED donors and encourage established donors to INCREASE their gift.  Our generous benefactor has offered to match the total amount of gifts raised within those three categories.  Can you imagine the possibility?  We believe the sky is the limit!

Please help us spread the word and encourage anyone who has not made a gift to The Fund to consider making one this year.  If you have made a gift in the past, please consider increasing that amount.

Thank you and let's see if we can reach the sky!
