The Trustees have selected Saturday, November 4 from 10-12 as the annual fall cleanup. We will rake the Memorial and Seminary properties as well as pick up the gazillion acorns that we have been blessed with this year. We need rakes, gloves and assistance. Pizza will be provided at noon for the workers. Please RSVP to Lisa Brunckhorst via email or at 523-1241 to give some idea of the number of people we can plan on.

Race, Reconciliation, and Reformation -
a Special Event with Dean Michael Dantley
Our nation is already crossing the bridge. Following the current trajectory, nonwhites are projected to become the majority of the nation's children by 2020. Newborn babies of color already outnumber non-Hispanic white babies. As we continue to mark the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, the campus, congregation and community are invited to a special evening with Dr. Michael Dantley tomorrow, November 4, 2017 at 5:30 p.m.
This event at the Seminary Church, co-sponsored by the Campus Ministry (PCCM) as well as the Christian Education Committee, builds on our year long Journey through the Bible. Because of our biblical understanding of who God is and what the Lord intends for humanity, Jesus Christ continues to call us as his disciples to stand, speak, and work against racism.

Journey Through the Bible
Bible Study and Discussion will continue this Sunday. Enjoy a moment of fellowship in the lounge following worship. Around 11:30 p.m. join us in the Sanctuary where we'll begin our exploration of scripture together. All are welcome!

Thank You from the Youth Group
Dressed in clothes inspired by the Reformation, the Youth Group welcomed one and all to the Mission Trip Fundraiser Luncheon after the worship celebration last week. A wonderful spirit filled the Community Room of the Seminary Building as delicious soups were ladled into empty bowls.
While these tasty soups were enjoyed, we learned more about two upcoming mission initiatives from our community partners - the Kiwanis Holiday Food Drive on Sunday, November 5 and the Oxford Empty Bowls on Saturday, November 11 (please see next article for more information). By the time the kitchen was clean, the youth received $440 toward the 2018 Mission Trip.

Creating a Healthy Oxford Community
Kiwanis Holiday Food Drive
Sunday, November 5
Oxford Kiwanis holds its annual Holiday Food Drive on Sunday, November 5. City residents and neighbors on Bonham Road and in Springwood are asked to put bags or boxes of food on their front doorsteps by 1 pm. Identified volunteers will pick up food and knock on doors Sunday, from 1-4 pm. Any monetary donations will be used for bulk purchases of needed items.
The Seminary Building serves as a mission center for this food drive. The Kiwanis will use the Seminary as a staging area before all the food is transferred to the Oxford Community Choice Pantry.

Purpose: To join other Empty Bowls projects worldwide to raise awareness and money to combat hunger. All proceeds will be donated to the Oxford Community Choice Pantry to support its efforts to provide food to local families in need.
Cost: $10 adults; children 10 and under may eat for free (bowl not included).

Youth often lead us out of our comfort zone and into places we might not otherwise go. They display uninhibited love and connection with others. Jesus has special teachings for the children and the Bible reminds us to teach our children but also to learn from them. Fostering a child's spirit and enabling it to spread is critical work of our congregation. Anyone who has seen the circles of joy that close our Time with Young Disciples in worship, has witnessed the exuberant energy of the youngest in our church family. Many teach, care for and support our youth through wonderful Christian Education opportunities on Sundays and throughout the week.
As we prayerfully look toward calling an Associate Pastor for Family Ministry and Campus Ministry in 2018, your pledge will help ensure that we are supporting this central part of our life together. As you prayerfully consider your annual pledge to OPC, join us in building momentum as we empower our children to grow in faith and lead us forward into our future!

Save the Date - Veterans Day Appreciation
Join PCCM and the Deacons next Saturday evening, November 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the Seminary Building for a dialogue on the meaning of Veterans Day. We will recognize those who have served and are serving our country in the armed forces. The dialogue will be led by Dr. Scott Parkinson and Lee Fisher with patriotic music provided by the Brass Quintet of Oxford Community Band.

A Jericho Moment
What image do you have of Jerusalem, Nazareth - even Jericho? After nearly four decades of living with one image of Jericho, Pastor Lawrence stepped off the bus and there was the site of ancient Jericho. It was much, much smaller than the colossal and magnificent city portrayed in the Bible storybooks. Opportunities to learn about both historical and contemporary realities are so vital for our faith, economic and civic lives - our whole lives.
The Mosaic of Peace presented by the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program is a unique opportunity for you to walk the streets of Bethlehem and Hebron, Tel Aviv and Capernuam. This 12-day peacemaking conference from April 29-May 12 presents you with touch the ancient stones of Solomon's Temple and meet the "living stones" who are today's residents of the land called holy.
Registration for the Mosaic of Peace ends on November 15.

A heavy duty plastic juice jug is needed. Call Bridgite to make reservations. This event is open to all ages. It will be just in time for winter so our families can feed the birds. If you have a jug you would like to donate please leave it on the bench outside of the education office.

100 Years Ago This Week in Russia... and Today
The following is an excerpt of the November letter from Ellen and Al Smith, our PC(USA) missionaries serving Russia.
We are coming upon a significant event. November 7, 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution, a turning point that plunged Russia into something new and often horrific. I would argue that we should view contemporary events in Russia through the lens of the last 100 years. The people of Russia have lived through a traumatic century. Those that held the faith were strengthened by their faith and the community of believers. Many, in times of terror, abandoned their faith. Today the churches of Russia work to reconnect their neighbors with the Christian roots of the society.
The legacy of trauma unhealed can be generational. Thus, the people of Russia continue to suffer from the effects of 70-plus years of historical trauma. It is not to be expected that the cumulative effects of three generations of communist rule can be eradicated in a single generation.
When we began our service in Russia in 2001, I think we all (Russian and American partners) were focusing on how our accompaniment could help the Russian churches that experienced persecution and isolation. Most Americans have no experience of what it means to be persecuted for one's faith.
In these [current] unsettled times, when the U.S. and Russia are divided by various political issues, we have heard people question whether they should travel to Russia, or invite their Russian partners to the US. For us, it seems more important than ever to come together, "making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. ..."
As we have traveled, we have talked about bridges. Bridges serve an important purpose in our lives. Whether we are willing to cross any given bridge and be connected depends on our perspective.
If the journey takes too many bridges and too many miles, maybe it's not worth going.
Make no mistake. We are not the bridge. Jesus Christ is the bridge.
Our perspective about the bridge will determine whether we are willing to cross it. People everywhere are anxious and afraid. Let us not let our fear isolate ourselves or our brothers and sisters in Christ on the far side of the globe, but let us use the bridge to connect and reflect on who we are as the Body of Christ. We can assure you that Russia is safe to visit, and our partners invite you.
