Grandparents Day
Our preschoolers and pre-kindergarteners shared a wonderful morning with their grandparents last week. There was so much joy for the grandparents as they sat and traced their grandchildren's hand prints on their grandparents' poem cards. They all enjoyed a yummy breakfast and then visited the photo booth!

The three purposes of Grandparents Day is to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.

Grandparents are our continuing ties to the near-past, to the events, beliefs, and experiences that so strongly affect our lives and the world around us. Whether they are our own or surrogate grandparents who fill some of the gaps in our mobile society, our senior generation also provides our society a link to our national heritage and traditions. We all know grandparents whose values transcend passing fads and pressures and who possess the wisdom of distilled pain and joy. Because they are usually free to love, guide, and befriend the young without having to take all daily responsibility for them, they can often reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the spaces between generations.

Check out all of the wonderful pictures from Grandparents Day!

Take the National Red Ribbon Campaign Pledge now, and be a part of the creation of a drug-free America.
I support Red Ribbon Week. I pledge to grow up safe, healthy, and drug-free by:
Understanding the dangers of drug use and abuse.
Respecting myself and being drug-free.
Spreading the word to family and friends about the importance of being healthy and drug-free.

What's the Pledge about?
  1. As parents and citizens, we will talk to our children and the children in our lives about the dangers of drug abuse.
  2. We will set clear rules for our children about not using drugs.
  3. We will set a good example for our children by not using illegal drugs or medicine without prescriptions.
  4. We will monitor our children's behavior and enforce appropriate consequences so that our rules are respected.
  5. We will encourage family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep children safe from substance abuse.

Magnus Health: An Important Reminder to Complete All Forms
Parents, it is imperative that ALL of your child's forms are complete in Magnus Health. Our kindergarten through 8th grade classes will be going on field trips soon, and your child needs all of his or her forms completed to attend the field trips.

Please make sure that you have logged in to your student's Magnus Health account and completed all required forms and information. If any of the forms do not apply to your student this year, please select "not applicable" to complete the requirements in Magnus. Concussion forms are required for all students, regardless of sports activities. Incomplete forms in your Magnus account will prevent students from participating in scheduled field trips.

The Power of Kindness
Weekly Challenge for October and National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month
Did you know that if you perform kind acts for two minutes a day for 21 days, you can actually retrain your brain to be more positive? The more positive your mindset is, the more productive, happy, and creative you become. Your perception of "quality of life" immediately changes.

This October, all campuses will participate in National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month, and each campus will create unique experiences and discussions around this topic for students, teachers, and staff members. We are initiating this month-long campaign with a kindness challenge, open to all employees and students. Throughout the month, you will receive a weekly "Random Act of Kindness" statement. Even when we have tough days, being kind is good for our hearts and good for our brains. We hope you have fun participating, and we appreciate you taking part in these acts of kindness!

Everyone has already done such a wonderful job of performing these random acts of kindness! Anything that is not already a habit takes time, effort, and work, and we encourage and challenge you to be mindful of these positive tasks and to keep up the great work!

To review, we've already been asked to practice the following acts of kindness:
Give someone an authentic compliment.
Without being asked, complete a simple task/chore that you would not normally do.

And we have a new random act of kindness for this week: Put a smile on someone's face ---   shake someone's hand, and say "good morning"; send an "I miss you today" text to a friend or family member; hold a door open for someone; etc.

Junior High Shadow Days at Fairmont Prep
In order for your child to better understand what an average day is like at Fairmont Prep, we encourage you to schedule a Shadow Day for him or her. Accompanied by one of Fairmont Prep's outstanding student ambassadors, your student will sit in on classes in his or her area of interest and spend time with peers to hear about day-to-day life at Fairmont Prep. Transportation to and from the junior high campus will be provided, and lunch will also be provided. Permission slips must be turned in to your campus assistant director at least four days before the scheduled Shadow Day, and your student will need to wear his or her regular required uniform on this day. We have one more Shadow Day option in early November. You can access more information by downloading our informational flyer, which also includes the required permission slip. Please see your assistant director to sign up.

Getting to Know You: New Teacher Spotlight
Ms. Brittani Holland, 2nd Grade Teacher
Ms. Holland has completed her teaching credential from California State University, Fullerton and has also completed her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Her major in college was psychology with a minor in health science. Some of her previous careers have included teaching preschool, planning curriculum to create fun learning experiences, and serving as a caseworker with Boys Republic, where she assisted in the behavioral, educational, and emotional support the boys needed.

Ms. Holland loves to travel and has volunteered in India and Ecuador, teaching English and educational songs and games to children in an orphanage. She also loves to exercise, hike, kayak, and kickbox!

Ms. Holland's motivation to become a teacher stems from a lifelong desire to serve others.

"I always wanted to be in a helping profession," she said. "I enjoy being able to encourage, assist, or motivate others to be what they want to be or achieve what they want to achieve. I have experience in teaching preschool and loved each of the nine years. I have experience working with children with disabilities and enjoyed the care and patience those two years brought. I loved working in the medical field and being able to soothe worried families. I worked with juvenile delinquent boys as a caseworker and realized the part of the job I enjoyed most was the credit recovery program. I loved being able to tutor and assist the boys in reaching their educational goals who were deprived from them most. I then left my job after three years and enrolled in the credential program at California State University of Fullerton. Each career I chose and experience that I had has led to me to this job, and I have been fortunate enough to bring everything I have learned with me to make me the best possible teacher."

Ms. Holland also said that she loves the happiness that the children show and their excitement for learning new things each day.

Marine Biology Students Gain Exciting Learning Experience on Field Trip
Fairmont Prep's marine biology students recently took a field trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach and the California State University, Long Beach Marine Biology Department.

At the aquarium, students puzzled out how to build their own filtration systems for aquariums. At CSU Long Beach, three different labs gave tours and introductions to their research: the famous Shark Lab, a toxic aquacology lab that studies the harmful effects of plastics on different types of cells, and a wetlands ecology lab that closely studies the beaches and lands closest to us.

Lastly, and most enjoyably, students wandered through a hands-on invertebrate lab, where 20-odd different species ---      starfish, sea urchins, crabs, sea slugs, starfish, sea anemones, and more ---        were on display for touching, handling, and looking through microscopes! A special thanks goes out to Professor Bruno Pernet, who coordinated the visit and set up the invertebrate lab for the students.
