50,000 SAUSD STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN GREAT SHAKEOUT EARTHQUAKE DRILL

Fifty thousand SAUSD students got a lesson in earthquake safety and preparedness on October 19, 2017 when the district participated in the global Great ShakeOut earthquake drill. From California to New Zealand, more than 21 million people practiced dropping, covering and holding on during the drill. In Santa Ana Unified, all schools and the district office participated in the event, which is designed to heighten awareness about earthquake preparedness. SAUSD HOLDS DISTRICTWIDE SAT/PSAT DAY

High school students from Century, Chavez, Godinez, Griset, Middle College, REACH, Saddleback, Santa Ana, Segerstrom and Santa Ana Valley took SAT or PSAT tests for free, courtesy of SAUSD, all on October 11, 2017 during the districtwide SAT/PSAT day. Of those participants, 3,600 seniors took the SAT with essay, 7,290 sophomores and juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), and 3,620 took the PSAT 8/9. While SAUSD has been giving the PSAT for several years to 10th and 11th grade students, through the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips, the district added the 9th grade to the PSAT and the 12th grade to SAT this year. By participating in the suite of SAT Assessments, students are given free access to official SAT Practice through Kahn Academy, and students are eligible for additional free score sends and college application fee waivers. The district is able to use the data to track performance over time as well as advise students who might not otherwise have thought about taking advantage of Advanced Placement classes or other dual enrollment opportunities.
