Dear Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,
Outstanding Educator
Honored at the Georgia Council for Social Studies (GCSS) Annual Conference, Haymon-Morris Middle School teacher Heather Birch was the recipient of the "Gwen Hutcheson Outstanding Educator Award". Each year, the GCSS recognizes outstanding educators who demonstrate significant service and foster the development of democratic values and citizenship in the classroom, school, and community as well as exhibit professional involvement beyond the normal job requirements.
David Kendrick, President-Elect - Georgia Council for Social Studies said "Heather truly is an asset to Barrow County, her fellow educators at Haymon Morris Middle School, and the other 8th grade Georgia Studies teachers with whom she is a willing leader and collaborator."

Passion for Reading
The Patriots had a special visit from First Lady of Georgia, Sandra Deal, who read books with fifth graders and discussed the importance of education. She encouraged students to study and practice in order to become better readers.
First Lady Deal also spoke about life in the Governor's mansion, and how being a teacher influenced her reading habits as a First Lady. Yargo Elementary School and the Barrow County School System were honored by the opportunity to have her visit us and share her passion for reading.
Partners In Education Recognition
BCSS Partners In Education (PIE) were invited to an Aloha themed luncheon with a special performance by The Uke-A-Ladies from Apalachee High School. A presentation was made by Lee Bane, BCSS Director of Innovative Learning, Pamela Walker, President & CEO ArtsNow and Dee Dee Sandt, Development Director ArtsNow. Speakers included Dr. Chris McMichael, BCSS Superintendent, Ellen Petree, School & Community Relations Specialist, Miranda Deaton (AHS), and Tywanda Mathis (WBHS), Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Coordinators.
BCSS Partners in Education serve in many capacities. Partners are sought on matters of curriculum, policy decisions, budget discussions, and are active school governance team members. The PIE program involves local businesses and agencies designed to act as a catalyst in bringing diversified groups together, as well as exposing our children to real-world and work experiences. This program is a vital asset to our school system. Thank you BCSS PIE for reaching out to touch the lives of future leaders in Barrow County classrooms today and being part of our school family.
