The Tiger's Roar!
Your Community Brief from Jones High School
Friday, October 20, 2017

"Meet the Principal" during both lunches - Principal Kirby introduces herself to students and invites them to share what's important to them.
It is hard to believe, but today we conclude the first week of the 2017-2018 second quarter. We will be issuing first quarter report cards next Friday, October 27. We encourage all of our Tiger parents to review their student's report card as soon as possible once they bring them home.

On Monday, October 23 we will be holding our October School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting. All members of our school community are invited to attend and participate. These meetings are the best way to help JHS with its continuing implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP).

We will also have our Annual Title I Meeting on Monday, October 23 in the Media Center, immediately following the SAC meeting. We invite all parents, students, and community members to come learn more about how Jones benefits from Title I resources.

Our regular Tiger's Roar! readers know about the incredible opportunity our band & chorus have next spring to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This is a tremendous recognition, but between now and then we need the community to help support the students with the associated travel costs. As you will see below, this Saturday the Jones High School Foundation is assisting with two special fundraisers in support of the 2018 Carnegie Hall trip. Please take note and if you are out and about tomorrow, kindly take a few minutes to participate. Any monies collected will go directly to help offset the travel costs to New York City.

I hope this update finds you well and having enjoyed a productive week. As always, thank you for your ongoing support.

Heading to Carnegie Hall!

Jones High School Foundation

Vice Admiral David Brewer III, USN Ret. (JHS Class of 1963 - Choir; Jones High School Foundation President) with Willie Weaver (President, JHS Class of 1961) and Willie Frank Bacon (JHS Class of 1961 - Band) at the Carnegie Hall Kickoff & Sponsorship Appreciation Concert on Tuesday evening.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Jones High School Class of 1961 for winning the Top Class Award for the 2016-17 school year. JHS '61 had the most classmates donating (13) & raised over $4350 for our annual campaign (1 Sep 2016 - 31 Aug 2017). We presented the class with a beautiful plaque and each of the classmates that donated a minimum of $10 will receive a Top Class Award certificate. Remember, the Top Class Award is based on a weighted formula, with 80% of the weight towards the number of classmates. Two other classes actually donated more money, but did not have the most classmates donating. Several of 61's classmates donated on a monthly basis. JHS classes contributed over $27K to last school year's campaign.

  Carnegie Hall, New York City

Carnegie Hall Bound - It will cost $2,000.00 per student with chaperones to make the Carnegie Hall trip a reality for our Concert Choir & Wind Ensemble. We're asking each class to sponsor at least one student. Thus, to qualify for this year's Top Class Award, a class must donate a minimum of $2,000.00. If 25 of your classmates donate an average of $15/month over the next six months, then your class will have donated $2,250.00. Since we must pay for this trip in installments, with the first installment due in November 2017, we're asking alumni to donate on a monthly basis until they reach your desired sponsorship level goal. The last installment is due in March 2018. So, get a jump start on this year's Top Class Award competition & encourage the members of your class to visit our website www.supportjoneshigh.com for information on how to donate online or send a donation in the mail.

Marine Science with Mr. Robertson

Mr. Robertson's Marine Science Honors class did a lab experiment to test the properties of wind-generated waves. They tested for variables such as wind speed and velocity. Florida Standard: SC.912.P.10.20 - Describe the measurable properties of waves and explain the relationships among them and how these properties change when the wave moves from one medium to another.

Medical Magnet, IB, JROTC

Some of our female Medical Magnet, IB and JROTC students had the privilege through stemCONNECT to hear Rear Admiral Swap speak. They shared this experience via virtual feed with students from Hagerty High School and Seminole High School. Rear Admiral Swap spoke to our students about choosing a career and going from a young girl with no idea of what she wanted to do, to running all of the medical facilities in the United States Navy.

The students had the opportunity to ask the Rear Admiral questions as well. This was an awesome experience and many of our students were elated to have gotten the opportunity to speak to such a high ranking female officer. Mrs. Brown (IB Coordinator) and Mrs. Wells-Harris (Medical Magnet Coordinator) were very proud of our students as they asked some great questions that caused the Rear Admiral to really have to think about her responses. Thank you stemCONNECT for this opportunity.

Ms. Austin's English I Class

Students work on a digital graphic organizer to analyze author's purpose, point of view, and structure in works of literature. Florida Standards: LAFS.910.RL.2.5: Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise; LAFS.910.RL.2.6 Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature.

A Special Night

Matt Williams always dreamed about a moment like Wednesday night's Heat-Magic game.

The 3-point specialist graduated from Jones High School in Orlando and UCF, and he's now with the Heat on a two-way contract. He'll spend most of the season with the Heat's G-League affiliate in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Jones High sits just a 1½-mile drive from Amway Center, and Williams expected to have 20 to 30 friends and family attend Wednesday's game.

The Heat had Williams on their active roster Wednesday.

"Who would've written this script?" Williams said. "I'm from Orlando. I've been here my whole life. I got blessed to get a scholarship to go to UCF and played high school here, and now I have another amazing opportunity with the NBA. So it all just feels good. It's keeping me humble. My hometown fans are doing a good job of keeping me humble and letting me know I still have a lot of work to do. It just feels good to have my hometown behind me."

We are so proud of Class of 2018 Salutatorian Alyssa Wilson and Class of 2019 Top Ten Kenneth Rolle II for representing the GREAT Jones High School on Superintendent Dr. Jenkins' Student Advisory Council.  Alyssa and Kenneth, along with representatives from the other 18 high schools, will help generate awareness of the following campaigns through social media: #rivalrylove (rival high school students respecting one another), #ownyourimage (pay attention to what you post online), and #toosmarttostart (drugs).

Kudos to National Honor Society seniors Chelsea Cosme, Santren Patterson, and Samantha Merisier for volunteering at Florida Citrus Sports' Feast on the 50 event last week. They did an awesome job working in the kids' play area.

Our 6th and 7th period ELEVATE classes are giving back by mentoring 5th graders at Orange Center Elementary School. Our student leaders are doing an extraordinary job teaching life skills and the importance of education to future Tigers. Their motto is "building character and creating futures." We are looking forward to seeing our Jones students continue to do amazing things as they graduate with a plan for the future.

Orange County School Board Member Kat Gordon named a finalist for the 2017 Green-Garner Award

gordon
District 5 School Board Member Kathleen "Kat" Gordon was recently named a finalist for the 2017 Green-Garner Award -  the nation's top honor for urban-education leaders, presented by the Council of the Great City Schools. Mrs. Gordon is among 11 other school board members from across the nation who will be recognized for their outstanding leadership and contributions to urban education.

For more than 50 years, Mrs. Gordon has served as a dedicated public servant in support of education, having held roles as a librarian, counselor, career specialist and teacher.

As the longest-serving school board member for Orange County Public Schools, she has been instrumental in a number of key initiatives, including the recent opening of the OCPS Academic Center for Excellence (OCPS ACE).

A first-of-its-kind preschool through eighth grade school serving students on one campus, OCPS ACE is also a Community Partnership School - meaning it relies on core partners to support students. To open the school, OCPS formed partnerships with the University of Central Florida, Valencia College, Children's Home Society of Florida, Orange Blossom Family Health, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, and Rosen Foundation.

Mrs. Gordon has served on numerous boards, including the Governor of Florida's state Dropout Task Force; Orange County Head Start Policy Council and Community Action Board; Florida School Boards Association; and National School Boards Association Black Caucus.

Her accolades are extensive and include multiple Teacher of the Year honors, District Secondary Media Specialist of the Year, Junior Achievement's Educator of the Year Award, Orange County, Florida's Humanitarian Award and so much more.

The Green-Garner Award is named in memory of Richard R. Green, the first African American chancellor of the New York City school system, and businessman Edward Garner, who served on the Denver school board.
