Tips for Halloween

Halloween- It's the most popular day of the year for kids after Christmas.
It is probably the one day that we need to be realistic; kids are going to eat candy- NOT FRUIT. So parents and kids need to have a plan.
  • Eat a nutritious meal before going trick-or-treating, so children are not hungry and only want to eat candy that night.
  • Plan ahead of time, with your child, the number of treats they can have each day after Halloween.  Will they be a treat after dinner with some apple slices? Pack one with school lunch?  Will they be part of the healthy after school snack?  You and your child need to establish a healthy plan that works and show your child that they can enjoy their candy for weeks to follow.  If you make the plan with your child, stick with it.
  • Keep candy out of reach to prevent continuous and mindless eating of candy.
  • Make sure all meals and snacks include fruits, vegetables and milk
  • Lastly, do not use the candy as a tool to get your kids to eat vegetables and other foods they do not like, if you do they will never eat them as an adult. Plus that is not living up to your plan as a parent.  So I suggest you write out the plan and post it where everyone can see it.

Healthy Tips for the Flu Season
It's October, summer has ended. Fall is upon us and in full effect. Although, fall consists of many great things such as Thanksgiving, Halloween and other great moments, one of the most impactful things that comes with fall is flu season. The flu is infectious disease of the respiratory system caused by a virus and characterized by fever, muscle pain, headache, and inflammation of the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract. In spite of the fact that doctors recommend flu shots, I know from personal experience you can get the flu even if you have had the vaccine shot. Studies have also shown it is better to incorporate a higher intake of water, exercise regularly, and eat foods containing phytochemicals to prevent the flu. Roughly 60% percent of the average human body is made up of water, which is why it is important to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh every day. Water is extremely beneficial when facing the flu because it flushes the toxins out of the body. Exercising regularly not only helps maintain weight and other great things, it allows your blood to pump regularly which increases the activity of white blood cells that attack viruses. Lastly eating foods containing phytochemicals help strengthen cells and fight off damage and they also help strengthen your immune system. Some phytochemicals are carrots, green leafy vegetables or raspberries. It is also great to incorporate healthy foods and exercise in your everyday life and make a concerted effort to proactive rather than reactive and eat healthy when you are sick.
We do recommend that you take the advise of your doctor regarding the flu shot.  The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a seasonal flu vaccine. Keep in mind that vaccination is especially important for certain people who are at high risk or who are in close contact with high-risk persons.
