prez PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Frank Cesario

"But we didn't really know him."  I heard that described of someone who interviewed for a position, blew everyone out of the water during the interview process, and yet ended up second.  One of those involved in the decision used this phrase to describe what drove the result.  To be sure, the selected candidate was excellent.  But this description is a reminder that our influence is impacted by what we leave behind, and how well people feel that they know us.  How well we rock the meeting room fades after we leave it, leaving behind only what those other people retain of us.  Will they call us first if an issue perfectly matches our skill sets or the solutions our entities provide?  Will they pick our proposal first when they wrestle with all of their choices?  We aren't available to impact those decisions anymore, only their memories of us and comfort with us as a partner.

Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop, Dean Martin and Joey Lawford.  Yes, the original "Rat Pack."  That simple two-word description likely conjures a powerful image in your mind.  Dictionary.com defines a Rat Pack as, "a close-knit group of people with common interests who participate in various professional and recreational activities together."  After we get together for our seventh (7th!) annual FEI Chicago CFO of the Year Awards Program on November 1, our December 5th holiday social will reinforce all things "Rat Pack."  Perfect for like-minded professionals building lasting images (only good ones) and enjoying some recreation time at The Allerton Hotel!

cmgCAREER MANAGEMENT GROUP NEWS

Vince DiRaddo
   CMG Chair
With summer wrapping up, we had an engaging crowd at our September CMG meeting.  Barrett Peterson spoke on how to remain relevant and valuable regardless of career stage or age, and how to sell that relevance with confidence. He discussed selected observations on networking, using digital technology and social media. Barrett shared his thoughts on career management and navigating transition, reflecting his own three trips through that experience.

As the chill starts to come in the air, join us in October when Founder and President of JJRE Consulting, LLC, Philip Fulton moderates a panel of CEO's and CFO's as they discuss "What CEOs Expect from CFOs and What CFOs Expect from their CEOs."  We are fortunate to have an esteemed panel consisting of Kim Sell, Sal Burd, Michael Segreti, and Tom Galvan.   Philip's experience advising hundreds of CEOs, Presidents and business owners positions him well to challenge the panelists on: How can a CFO best guide and support a CEO; Is your person really a CFO or Controller or a really good accountant; How does the CFO define strategy vs. how CEO defines strategy; and Has the board\ownership installed the right person?

Be sure to add these dynamic speakers and engaging topics coming from CMG to the balance of your 2017- 2018 calendars:

FASB Just Moved a Mountain, Changed Landscape on Hedging -   The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has issued a major update to standards for hedging activities. Accounting Standards Update No. 2017-12, "Derivatives and Hedging (Topic 815): Targeted Improvements to Accounting for Hedging Activities," several years in the making, offers simplification, opens the door to new strategies, and may entice nonhedgers to become hedgers. While hedge accounting is still complex and continues to require precise documentation, the update expands permissible hedge strategies and permits early adoption. This article describes some of the significant portions of the standard and offers a reminder of effective dates.  To learn more about FASB's hedge accounting update and potential new strategies for your company,  read the  Crowe article by Christopher L. Moore, CPA:  "FASB Just Moved a Mountain, Changed Landscape on Hedging," or contact Kevin Wydra at 630-586-5242.

Turning risk into opportunity: Five questions to ask We're all busy, caught up in our day-to-day work to satisfy customers and get the product out the door, which too often means taking a reactive rather than proactive approach to risk. But thinking about risk now can keep your organization from being the subject of negative press, avoid fines, penalties, and lawsuits, and missing strategic targets. Organizations make themselves vulnerable to risk in ways you may not have thought about. Are you vulnerable?  Ask yourself these five questions.

Urgent Illinois Unclaimed Property Update -  The Illinois General Assembly passed landmark legislation on 7/6/17 that enacts the new Illinois Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act ("IL RUUPA").  The IL RUUPA makes sweeping changes to Illinois unclaimed property reporting and administration including: (a) elimination of business-to-business exemption, (b) imposes extrapolation penalty for failure to retain records, ('c) creates 5-year transitional period, (d) reduces dormancy periods from 5 years to 3 years for many property types, and (e) compensates 3rd party auditors up to 15% contingent fee on assessments, amongst many other changes.  The IL RUUPA is effective 1/1/2018.  More information available at VIEW THE ALERT.  Submitted by Joseph R. From Silver Sponsor Grant Thornton
A tax conundrum: How tax reform could hurt main street businesses - The promise of tax reform - particularly tax relief for corporations - seems to be a fairly straightforward pro-business idea: U.S. companies pay the highest tax rate in the industrialized world, and so lowering that rate would seem to be good for U.S. businesses - and workers. But tax policy is never that simple - and policymakers face a conundrum: If they try to address just one anti-competitive tax policy, they might expand another one and hurt the U.S. economy in the process. The core issue is this: While we hear a lot about how high the U.S. corporate tax rate is, most U.S. businesses don't pay taxes on their profits at that rate. Roughly 90% of U.S. businesses pay taxes through the individual returns of their owners - what are generally called pass-through entities. Some pass-throughs barely break-even; some do fabulously well - either way, their profits are treated differently than those of corporations. Read more about the core challenges related to pass-thought tax reform   here
