Small Business Tax Wins
Thanks to all of you who added your voice to our efforts to stop the small business tax changes proposed this summer by the federal government.

Click here for a complete review of the changes on:
  • Small Business Corporate Income Tax Rate,
  • Liftetime Capital Gains Exemption,
  • Income Splitting, and
  • Passive Investment Income Held in a Private Company.
We worked with you, other chambers and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce to make sure the Finance Minister knew the negative impact of its tax changes on small business. It looks like it worked!

The Finance Minister is making a series of announcements this week modifying or ending the tax changes that were proposed this summer. He has also announced a cut in the small business income tax rate from 10.5% to 9%.

The power of The Chamber working on behalf of small business is clear.

It's Your Month to Celebrate
Premier John Horgan delivered a
Chamber CEO Catherine Holt, Premier John Horgan and Synergy CEO Jill Doucette at the Small Business Week Launch.
message of strong support, including lower taxes, to help kick off Small Business Week (Oct. 16 to Oct. 20). The Chamber couldn't contain ourselves to just a week, so we are celebrating October as Small Business Month.

"Small businesses are the economic engines of BC's communities and create good jobs for people throughout the province," said Premier Horgan. "We're working hard to make sure that small businesses and manufacturers have the support they need. That's why we're reducing the small business tax rate to 2% from 2.5% and establishing a Small Business Task Force to help strengthen and grow the sector in BC."

The Small Business Profile 2017 shows that employment in BC's small-business sector grew faster in 2016 than at any time in the past decade, with more than one million people employed in small businesses last year. In fact, small businesses produced more than one-third of provincial GDP in 2016 and $15.8 billion in exports in 2015, an increase of nearly $3 billion over the previous year.

Record Amount of TP Raised!
On Sat, Oct 14 The Chamber's Prodigy Group held the  third annual TP the Town Victoria, an initiative raising rolls of toilet paper for the Mustard Seed. In part thanks to a generous donation by Kruger in the amount of 90,000 rolls, there were 115,000 rolls of toilet paper raised in total this year for families in need.

The goal of TP the Town is not just to provide toilet paper, but to provide dignity. Toilet paper is something that most of us never have to think twice about, but it can be a source of anxiety for people in need. Through TP the Town Victoria, The Prodigy Group helps to eliminate the need to choose between food and toilet paper.

Thanks to Prodigy Group's efforts, the Mustard Seed will have enough toilet paper to last one full year.

The Chamber: Q&A on Going Green
The Chamber became Green certified earlier this year. Synergy Sustainability Institute sat down with our Operations Manager, Cheryl Wirch-Ryckman, for a Q&A on environmental best practices at The Chamber.

What were the most challenging sustainability initiatives implement at The Chamber?
Changing our billing system to become paperless. Staff recycling - making sure the right item ends up in the right bin. Biking - getting staff to switch from their cars to bikes.

Why did The Chamber decide to go green?
It was simply the right thing to do.

In what area have you seen the most cost savings?
Invoicing - paper, stamp, and envelope savings and staff time was reduced. Changing to electronic billing led to less paper consumption and faster payments, a real benefit.

Aside from long-term cost savings, what are some of the other benefits you see from operating The Chamber in a more sustainable way?
Increased staff engagement. There is a physical benefit of getting up to walk to recycling bins, as no longer are there trash bins right beside our desks.

How are staff encouraged to adapt to the green changes?
The staff don't need much encouragement, there are no "archaic thinkers" in our group. The team participates in Bike to Work Week and have been known to coach each other on choosing the most appropriate cycling routes. And there is always a surprising amount of impromptu staff meeting around the recycling containers.

Any advice to business owners who are considering operating in a more sustainable manner?
Use it as a team building exercises. Engage staff and members - have them come up with the strategies and turn it into a friendly competition if possible. You are more likely to have adoption from grass roots up rather than management down.
