Top 5: How You Support the Whole Child
Our educators shared how they're working to support the whole child by keeping our kids healthy, supported, engaged, challenged, safe, and socially and emotionally intelligent. The Top 5 responses are below, and congratulations to our giveaway prize winner, Caroline Robbins at Denison Montessori!

5.  " I support the whole child by guiding a team of passionate and dedicated folks who take pride in providing nutritious food and nutrition education so that kids are ready to learn. My teams arrive early in the morning and prepare healthy and appealing food choices made with love and served with a smile so that kiddos are not distracted from their learning process by feelings of hunger." -- Theresa Hafner, Enterprise Management

4. "I support the whole child with school and district-level health data that helps shape the major improvement strategies within our schools' Unified Improvement Plans to directly impact budget, staffing, curricula, and other services for each and every student." -- Scott Romero, Student Equity and Opportunity

Denver Online High School provides free transportation and free admission to all school field trips for all students.
3. " One way that Denver Online is supporting the whole child is by providing free monthly field trips for students, supplying both free transportation and free admission to anywhere the school goes. The school secured a Groove Auto Drive for Education Grant that enables this opportunity for students. Students are now able to grow friendships and experience new opportunities, regardless of their economic standing or transportation resources." -- Kaci Sintek, Denver Online High School

2. "Students end every day with social emotional learning to develop skills to be the best citizens they can be. We have community meetings every Monday and Friday where our whole school learns new character traits and we celebrate students and teachers who have gone above and beyond in our special trait for the week." -- Nicole Schrensky, Ashley Elementary

1. " At Denison Montessori, we follow the values of the ROSE (Respect Others, Self, and Environment) and incorporate this symbol throughout the school. We use simple phrases like 'follow the ROSE,' train children in ROSE Talks (conflict-resolution conversations using a rose as a talking stick) and recognize children following the ROSE values with a real rose on Fridays; often, the Friday rose goes to children who made some great choices in the midst of struggle or who need extra support." -- Caroline Robbins, Denison Montessori
You No Longer Need to Use Personal Days before Accessing Sick Leave Bank
Beginning Nov. 1, team members enrolled in the Sick Leave Bank will no longer need to use their accumulated personal leave days before accessing the paid days under the Sick Leave Bank. This means that a team member on leave can access Sick Leave Bank days without using personal days first and can return from leave with personal days still available to use as needed.

Sick Leave Bank offers eligible team members additional sick days when they are on an extended personal illness leave and have exhausted their accumulated paid leave. Click here for more information on Sick Leave Bank guidelines and procedures.

Starting in November, teachers will be automatically enrolled in the Sick Leave Bank. For more information, please refer to the guidelines and procedures linked above or to yesterday's edition of Teacher Weekly. All team members will have the opportunity to enroll in or opt out of the Sick Leave Bank during Open Enrollment in April 2018. DPS is Helping You Save for Retirement Beyond Colorado PERA
Reaching your retirement goals requires planning and resources. At DPS, we want to help you prepare for retirement. In addition to Colorado PERA, DPS offers tax-deferred programs (403(b) plans) to which you can contribute a portion of your salary toward your retirement.

DPS has also formed an advisory committee to review our 403(b) plan offerings. After an initial review of the current 403(b) plans offered by DPS, the committee will evaluate current vendors with the goals of reducing fees and other expenses, improving the performance of the underlying investments, and improving participation. Accountability

"Christina Abeyta-Greene, manager of online acceleration and intervention, lives our Shared Core Value of Accountability by leading DPS' efforts to help students regain coursework through our semester and course credit recovery program. High school students who fail a semester or full course risk falling off track to graduation, which can lead to further disengagement and dropout.

In fall 2016, students had completed only 25 credit recovery courses.  Because of Christina's efforts to support struggling students in our schools, students have already completed 129 credit recovery courses this year! This program is a critical Whole Child effort helping students feel engaged and supported to get back on track to graduate.

In addition to leading all course failure prevention, semester and credit recovery efforts across DPS high schools, Christina runs the regional credit recovery summer school program and supports schools to leverage Edgenuity courseware as an exam prep tool for college admissions. She is a rock star!"

-- John Albright, Postsecondary Readiness
