COSA Monthly Meeting
October 24th

Harm Reduction in the
Face of the Opiod Epidemic

Please join our guest presenters, Albie Parks and Liz Wynot from Tapestry to hear about the harm reduction initiatives being implemented in Hampshire County.

Harm reduction principles have implications for human service agencies beyond those that deal directly with people struggling with substance use disorder.
Harm Reduction as a means and philosophy of service delivery has been around for thirty years. Even though it has been endorsed by  MA DPH as the standard of care for substance use treatment, how harm reduction is implemented and understood by service agencies is broad and inconsistent.

What does harm reduction mean to you personally? What are the obstacles to implementing high quality harm reduction treatment in an agency setting? What are staff misconceptions and objections to harm reduction philosophy? What does high quality, low threshold harm reduction care involve?
Our meetings are always a great place to network with your peers and to hear about efforts being made by local agencies. Please join us!

We meet at Berkshire Children & Families on 220 Russell St. in Hadley from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM.

CHD
Through Her Eyes
13th Annual
Conference
October 27

The human service conference is designated for a variety of professionals, including social service providers and community leaders, who work with at-risk girls and women. This year's theme, "Through Her Eyes, She Sees YOU," addresses "the stress and trauma associated with working" with such a population, as well as addressing strategies for trauma, clients aging out of foster care and maternal mental health.

Motivational speaker Linda Edgecombe is the keynote presenter.  Edgecombe's morning presentation, "Moving From Distraction and Overwhelm to Engagement and Resilience," is described as one in which she "will weave her humorous stories and research into an interactive presentation with tons of aha moments and take-a-ways."

The conference is presented by the Center for Human Development, in partnership with Cambridge College, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the MassMutual Center, 1277 Main St.

United Way
2017 Health and Safety Community Survey

The United Way of Hampshire County (UWHC) is committed to building hope, opportunity and a better quality of life for all people in Hampshire County, through a focus on Children & Youth, Health & Safety and Economic Security. UWHC works to rally resources, advocate for unmet needs and convene problem-solvers to address community challenges. With this comes the responsibility of remaining current, focused and in sync with the community's goals and needs.

In August we convened panels with community members who are experts in the field of Health and Safety. We created this survey based on their feedback.  Now, we are seeking input from the community on how best to prioritize needs and services in our Health and Safety program area. UWHC understands that Health and Safety can be seen as a continuum spanning immediate needs to long-term solutions. Given that our resources are finite, we seek to ensure maximum impact of our investment.

We are reaching out to community members and community partners to gather additional perspectives.  Your responses will contribute to our understanding of the issues and will help us structure our upcoming funding opportunity.

The survey should take approximately 5 MINUTES, and is intended for individuals who live, work and/or provide services/support in Hampshire County.  Fill out the survey now!
