Online Career Resources

PCD subscribes to a number of online resources for students and graduates. Have you used these (in addition to Symplicity) in your job search yet?
Effective interviewing is a learned skill. Use InterviewStream to practice your interview skills and contact a career advisor with questions. You will have to click the 'Create Account' link the first time you visit the site and choose a username and password.

CareerShift 
Search, select and store job listings from all job boards and all company postings. Find contact information and manage your networking campaigns. You will have to register an account in the 'Sign Up' box the first time you use the site. Contact PCD for the code.

Vault (access through Symplicity)
Vault is a comprehensive career information and management tool. Access career e-books; company, industry and profession overviews; career advice articles and videos; internship database; and community discussion boards. You can access the site through the link in the Symplicity News Feed. You can create a new account the first time you use the site.

PSJD 
PSJD offers comprehensive, current information on a broad range of pro bono and public service opportunities. Their database currently lists several thousand organizations with available public service opportunities ranging from short-term, uncompensated volunteer positions during school semesters to full-time summer internships, to post-graduate jobs and fellowships. The first time you visit the site you will be required to fill out a short profile. You can then select your username and password, which will allow you to access the site thereafter.

Government Honors & Internship Handbook
Get information about application procedures and deadlines for federal government honors programs and internships. We recommend that you apply to these positions as soon as possible; do not wait until the deadline since many offers are granted on a rolling basis. See the Symplicity news feed for upcoming deadlines and the online password or contact PCD.

What's New?
  • Student Bar Association (SBA) Endowed Scholarship:  This scholarship is a warded annually to one day and one evening student.  Pick up an application today in the Student Academic Services Office, Suite 130 Sargent Hall, or email Catherine at  [email protected].   Include your written statement not to exceed two pages, explaining why you should receive the SBA Scholarship and whether you are requesting consideration based on  financial-need or merit, or both.  Submit your application to the Student Financial Services Office, 73 Tremont Street, 6th Floor; or email it to Catherine E. Dinon. Applications are due no later than November 3, 2017.  
     
  • Sarita & Claire Lucas Foundation Scholarship:  This scholarship is awarded to help African American female students with the costs associated with preparing for and taking the Delaware or Massachusetts Bar Exam.  May 2018 grads must have an interest in pursuing a career in prosecution.  Awards generally do not exceed $5,000.00.  Applications must  be Postmarked by February 4, 2018. Application and criteria  are available to download.  
     
  • Justinian Law Society of Massachusetts Scholarship for 2017-18:  This $2,500 scholarship is available to law day students (second and third-year), or law evening students (third and fourth-year).  C riteria includes: s cholastic ability and achievement; c haracter; a ctivities; d esire to practice law in the Commonwealth; and i nterest in Italian-American issues. The  Scholarship application due date is November 10, 2017. Information and application are available online
     
  • Attention 1L Students:  Financial Literacy & Scholarships!  Suffolk Student Financial Services (SFS) has launched the MAX program, a free, multi-faceted, personal finance curriculum designed in conjunction with law students and exclusively for law students by AccessLex Institute MAX is available for new 1Ls this year.  MAX provides a comprehensive personal finance program featuring a building block curriculum which will be there for each step of the law school journey and takes a multi-format approach - including an interactive online curriculum, in-person workshops, one-on-one counseling and more -  and delivers information in quick and easy to understand components to fit into demanding schedules.  In addition, MAX Offers scholarship incentives to participants to motivate them to stay on task and on track.   SFS invites all 1L students to make sure they will be graduating with maximized financial capability.   Sign up online !   
     
  • CareerBuzz  is the weekly PCD student newsletter. CareerBuzz will be emailed to all students on Tuesday afternoons and will also be archived on  Symplicity (in the News Feed). Most items will not be repeated in future issues, so be sure to read CareerBuzz every week to keep updated on all career-related news and information.

  • 2LD/3LE Interview Opportunities: There are still a few employers that will be interviewing 2LD/3LE students at Suffolk for summer 2018 positions. (1) Iron Mountain has paid summer legal intern positions available. Apply through Symplicity job posting #18366 before Tuesday, October 31.  (2) The U.S. Department of Justice, Environmental Enforcement Section is hiring unpaid summer interns. Apply through the MLSC Symplicity OCI session COLLECTION2 before noon on October 31. 
     
  • Each year the Law School awards the  Paul R. McLaughlin and the  Thomas J. Drinan Fellowships to a 2LD/3LE Suffolk student for the following summer. Each fellowship supports summer work in the field of criminal justice in such public service settings as the United States Attorney's Office, the Federal Defender's Office, the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, a District Attorney's Office, and the Committee for Public Counsel Services. Each fellow may receive a total award of $7000 over the course of 10 weeks. You must submit a letter of intent/personal statement indicating your demonstrated interest in and commitment to working in the criminal justice system, a resume, an unofficial transcript, and a list of three references (one should be a faculty member) via Symplicity ('OCI' tab, Drinan/McLaughlin session) by 10:00am on October 18, 2017. For questions, please contact Quaime Lee in the Office of Professional and Career Development.

  • Rappaport Fellowship Information Session - Tuesday, October 17, 3:00 to 4:00pm, room 265. Each summer the Rappaport Foundation selects a group of outstanding Massachusetts 1L and 2L law students who are interested in public service for the Rappaport Fellowship. The program includes a paid summer internship with a state or local government agency that is engaged in public policy issues relevant to the Greater Boston region. Fellows also meet in weekly summer seminars on legal and policy issues in Greater Boston, approaches to policymaking, and career development, and are matched with an accomplished lawyer, government official or legal scholar as a mentor.   • Pro Bono Fair - Monday, October 23 (date edit), 4:30 to 6:00pm, Main Function Room.Join us for this terrific opportunity to learn more about the vast array of pro bono opportunities in the Boston community and to get involved! Over 30 organizations will host information tables to meet casually with students and discuss their work.   • Research Blitz: Pizza and Pro Bono - Wednesday, November 1, 5:00 to 7:00pm, Main Function Room. Join LPS for a pro bono pizza party while you work with volunteer attorneys from Mass Legal Answers Online (MLAO), the Volunteer Lawyers Project, and Suffolk Law Alumni to answer legal questions for low income Massachusetts residents through Mass Legal Answers Online. You can make an immediate difference to someone struggling to resolve their legal problem. Both law students and Suffolk Alumni are invited to participate. RSVP 
     
  • Heads Up Career - Tuesday, November 7, 6:30pm, 5th Floor Lounge, Sargent Hall. This is a panel event where students will be able to engage with the panelists regarding internships, job hunting tips, and professionalism. There will be opportunities for 1Ls and 2Ls to ask questions on how to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. The goal is to provide students an avenue to receive real-time career advice from attorneys in the field and provide time for networking. Sponsored by the Women of Color Law Student Association and PCD.
     
  • Accelerator to Practice Information Session - Thursday, November 9, 2:00 to 3:00pm, room 315. Suffolk's Accelerator to Practice Program is the nation's first of its kind, comprehensive three-year program designed to prepare law school graduates for solo and small firm practice. The program has a specialized track of instruction that includes an expanded professional development and skills curriculum, technological training, supervised internships, associate-level work in the Accelerator Practice (clinic), and career development supports.   • Disability Law Career Panel - Thursday, November 9, 5:00 to 7:00pm. Join Disability Law Advocates for their panel event. Topics will include housing discrimination, social security, special education, protection and advocacy, and the school to prison pipeline. This event will be a great opportunity to network with a great group of attorneys working in a wide variety of settings, including legal services and public defense.   • FYSIP-Judicial Information Session - Thursday, November 16, 3:00 to 4:00pm, room 295. Over 80 1LD/2LEs were placed in state and federal judicial internships this past summer through FYSIP-Judicial (First Year Summer Internship Program).   • Liberty Mutual Design Project Event - Friday, November 17, 9:00am  to 6:00pm, 5th Floor Commons, Sargent Hall. This is an all-day design competition even. 6-8 teams of 3-5 students per team will have the opportunity to hear a real world scenario and then within certain parameters, have to innovate something to help solve the issue presented. At the conclusion of the event, there will be a networking reception where judges, officials from Liberty Mutual, and professionals will mingle with student competitors.   • I Know What You Did Last Summer - Thursday, November 30, 2:00 to 3:30pm, Main Function Room. Network with upper-level students and hear about their 1L summer experiences in the private and public sector.   • Specialty Courts in the Commonwealth - Wednesday, October 18, 4:00 to 5:00pm, BBA. This program will provide a brief overview of some of the specialty courts in Massachusetts, specifically Drug Court, Mental Health Court, and Veterans' Treatment Court. After the program, attendees will know what a "specialty court" is, which defendants are eligible to participate in a specialty court, what the objectives are for each of the specialty courts and its participants, and how those objectives are met. RSVP 
     
  • Making Connections in Boston's IP Community - Wednesday, October 18, 5:00 to 8:00pm, District Hall, 75 Northern Avenue, Boston. This Boston Patent Law Association (BPLA) event at District Hall in Boston's Innovation District combines panels of intellectual property (IP) lawyers who practice in a variety of law firm and in-house settings. Panelists will discuss the nature of their practice and their career paths followed by a networking reception with connection stations hosted by Boston area IP law firms and in-house offices.
