I remember when I first reached $100,000 revenue in my solo private practice. I was so excited I called up my father to tell him. He was a blue collar worker his entire life; he had to drop out of school in 8th grade to help support his very low income family. He was the oldest of 9 children.
My father had been upset that I left a stable but meaningless job doing Human Factors research in the auto industry,
to pursue my PhD in Clinical Psychology. I told him that my job had no meaning for me. As someone who grew up in the Depression, and whose family was always poor, this puzzled him greatly. "What does that have to do with anything?" he asked. "You make good money and have benefits!" Now years later, we are on the phone, and he tells me how proud he is of me, that I made $100,000 helping people. He starts crying.
That was twenty years ago - and I'm now bringing in twenty times that much revenue every year. And
I know MANY Group Practice owners who are generating over $1 million in revenue. It is actually being commonplace in our field! This is no joke and no hype. So all the old jokes about therapists being poor and not being able to make serious money can be retired.
