Volunteer of the Month:
Sigmund Diamond
Sig Diamond, a native of Los Angeles recently retired in 2016 after enjoying a long career working in the Garment Industry and as a Plant Manager for a local Public Warehouse. Prior to his retirement, Sig has always had a passion for volunteering and giving back to the local community. For many years, Sig was a Big Brother with the Jewish Home and helped Blind Children all throughout High School. Sig was also a volunteer for the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Hotline and his most recent accomplishment is volunteering for Providence Senior Peer Counseling Services. Sig is currently in the process of obtaining a Para Professional Certificate in Counseling Services.
Married for 54 years to his High School Sweetheart whom he met when he was 13 years old, Sig has 2 children and 3 grandchildren. When he is not volunteering as a Senior Peer Counselor or spending time with his family, Sig has recently become very involved with ONEgeneration, specifically the Senior Enrichment Center. Sig is a Co-facilitator in the Unzip your Lip class held every Tuesday afternoon from 2:40-4:00 pm. Sig also assists with the delivery of Panera Bread every Friday and also is often found re-designing the Thrift Corner as the seasons change. ONEgeneration is very thankful for all of Sig’s time and dedication towards not only being there for the members of ONEgeneration, but for his generous donations and kindness towards everyone who walks in the door.

Diabetes is a chronic disease for which there is no known cure, but it can be treated and controlled. This is important because significant medical problems result when it is not properly treated.
The major long-term complications relate to damage to blood vessels. Diabetes doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease; about 75% of deaths resulting from diabetes are due to coronary artery disease. Stroke and peripheral artery disease also develop when large blood vessels are damaged. The primary complications that involve small blood vessels include damage to the eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Damage to the eyes can result in gradual vision loss and blindness.
Damage to the kidneys can lead to diminished kidney function and kidney failure requiring dialysis. Damage to the nerves can lead to impaired sensation and pain at the sole of the foot leading to gait instability with increased risk of falls.
There is no known preventive measure for type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 85-90% of all cases, can often be prevented or delayed by maintaining a normal body weight, engaging in physical activity, and consuming a healthful diet.
The goals in managing diabetes are to:
- Keep blood glucose level as near to normal as possible by balancing food intake with medication and activity
- Maintain blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels within the normal range by decreasing the total amount of fat to 30% or less of total daily calories, and by reducing saturated fat and cholesterol
- Control blood pressure. The goal is to keep it lower than 130/80
Next month I will review the medications available for the treatment of diabetes.

Thank You to Galpin Motors and their Volunteer Team
|
Galpin Motors volunteers joined us on a Saturday last month to paint the Meeting Room at the Senior Enrichment Center. This room is used for small group activities and services such as senior tax preparation. These helpful volunteers also helped with cleanup around the center that day. Class of the Month
Belly Dancing
Mondays
1:00PM-2:00PM
Instructor:
Ossana Terterian
|
|
Come get your shimmy on and learn the art of Belly Dancing at ONEgeneration. The instructor, Ossana Tertetrian, has been dancing for most of her life and teaching classes for the past 10 years. She started teaching at ONEgeneration at the end of the summer in 2017. Ossana is a very communicative and energetic teacher. “Dancing is my passion. It’s what I love sharing. I’m at my best when I’m dancing. It’s my therapy, relaxation, you name it.” She says.
In 2014,
The Journal of Women and Aging published a small study on the effects of belly dancing classes. They found that classes could bring physical benefits, new social networks and social visibility to participants. Women in the study said that belly dancing “helped them cope with physical and psychological changes during menopause by boosting their feelings of overall health.” Others said that the self-confidence they achieved through dancing in public spilled over into other aspects of their lives.
