President's Message

WHEW!

What a month September has been! We set out to make all of September Mesothelioma Awareness MONTH - and thanks to all of you, our incredible supporters, volunteers, and sponsors, it was more of a success than ADAO could have imagined!

We had huge legislative work, and we were beyond thrilled that so many of you jumped into action! We submitted our ban asbestos petition to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with nearly 11,000 signatures. Along with the petition, we submitted an index of more than 100 scientific studies that collectively prove there is NO safe level of exposure to asbestos. Huge thanks to those who signed the petition, and our international scientific partners for supplying the studies.

Throughout the month, we ran our annual RAISE YOUR VOICE || 6-Word Quote campaign, and compiled our somber but powerful 2017 Memorial Dedication Video remembering those we've lost. Both projects turned out wonderfully this year, thanks fully to the heartfelt sharing from our community.

On the official Mesothelioma Awareness Day, we made our voices heard in a big way! For the first time in history, a dedicated flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor and memory of all asbestos victims. We also held our 12th Congressional Staff briefing, which had an all-star lineup of expert panelists and phenomenal attendance, with representation for nearly half the country. On top of all that, we were proud to join conversation with Mesothelioma Warriors from around the world in our annual #ENDMeso Twitter chat.

To say September was a whirlwind is an understatement, but we're not slowing down anytime soon. October is Health Literacy Month, and we'll be sharing fresh content each week to spark thought and conversation around this important issue. Please take this opportunity to join us on social media to spread knowledge and share your own stories and health literacy tips.
