Coloring for Adults
Tuesday, October 17th, 6-7:30pm
Come to unwind, while expressing your creativity! Adult coloring books offer a variety of designs, often intricate, just waiting to get lost in. Both colored pencils and fine tipped markers will be available, along with a wide variety of coloring books to choose pages from.
No registration needed. Stop by at any point between 6pm and 7:30pm

Big Read Book Talk
with Dr. Cotter

The Library is proud to be partnering once again with the Poughkeepsie Public Library District in "The Big Read" 2017. This year's title is "How We Became Human" - poetry by Joy Harjo. Ms. Harjo is a member of the Mvskoke Nation, and her poetry centers on the connection between humans and nature.
Join Dr. James Cotter, Professor of English at Mount Saint Mary College, as he leads a stimulating book discussion. Light refreshments will be served.

Big Read 2017

Join Beacon Poet Laureate, Tony Pena, for an evening of nature-inspired poetry. Mr. Pena will read his original works. Light refreshments will be offered at this free event. No registration is required.

Join performer/storyteller Vickie Raabin for a journey of discovery through Native American myths. Program will conclude with the making of a simple corn husk doll.

Fighting for the Same Land - Wappinger Indians and Tenant Rebels of the 1760s
Thursday, Oct. 26th, 6:30-7:30
Join James Merrell, Professor of History at Vassar College, for an intriguing talk about how in the 1760s three competing forces fought for the same lands here in the Hudson Valley: landlords (Beekmans, Philipses), Wappinger Indians, and rioting tenant farmers. Also, learn about the remarkable Wappinger leader Daniel Nimham, whose defense of his lands included a trip to London to lobby King George III. Fascinating research by James Merrell, one of the leading scholars in early American history, who has written extensively on Native American history during the colonial period.

Boys & ghouls ages 7-10 are invited for some Halloween fun filled with spine-chilling tales told by the glow of the jack-o-lantern. Revolting refreshments will be served! Costumes welcome!

Podcast Workshop
Wednesdays, 3:30-5pm,
October 18th- November 15th
Calling all teen podcast fans! This fall, Terry Nelson from The Ground, Beacon's community online radio station and HPL are teaming up for a 5 week podcast workshop for middle and high school students. During this weekly workshop, students will collaborate to produce a podcast to air on the Ground.
This workshop is made possible by the Friends of Howland Public Library.

Looking for a way to help your community? Join the Youth Advisory Committee.
The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a dedicated group of teens in grades 6-12 who want to make the Library a great place for teens. YAC meets the 3rd Thursday of each month from 3-4 pm to help the Library fulfill teen needs and interests.

Reel Life Film Club
Friday, October 20th, 6pm
at the Desmond Fish Library
HPL is teaming up with Cold Spring and Garrison again for Reel Life Film Club. The club is a great opportunity for students in grade 6 and up to view award-winning documentary films, eat pizza, and discuss the films with real filmmakers.
The first film of this season is the PBS documentary Hamilton's American and will be show at the Desmond Fish Library is Garrison. Register by calling the Garrison Library at 845-424-3020 so we know how much pizza to order.
The next film, To Be Heard, will be shown in Beacon on December 1st.

Anime Club

Anime & Manga fans can drop by the library the 3rd Friday of every month Anime Club. Each month teens choose the anime to be shown from our current anime DVDs or streaming from crunchyroll.com. Refreshments served.
Parents please note that many of the anime shown may be PG13 or TV14.
