The Municipality of the County of Cumberland (Municipality) has made Application to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board for an Order approving the service territory of the proposed Pugwash Water Utility and for an approval of an Interim Schedule of Rates and Charges for Water and Water Services and Schedule of Rules and Regulations.

Cumberland Central Landfill Update
|
|
Solid waste collection continues following fire at the Cumberland Central Recycling Facility
Collection continues for Cumberland County residents after the fire that took place on September 12 destroyed the Cumberland Central Recycling Facility. Staff continue to investigate various options for the processing of Cumberland's recyclables and will be sending a load to Scotia Recycling in Kentville this Saturday for evaluation.
Staff and management would like to thank all responding Fire Departments who assisted with the fire.
Unfortunately due to the fire, the Facility Tour scheduled for October 14 has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Low Income Tax Exemption
The Municipality's Low Income Tax Exemption applications are now available. The Low Income Tax Exemption provides assistance to homeowners to help pay their residential property taxes. Qualified applicants will receive a credit which is applied directly to the tax account.
Application forms are available on our website or may be obtained by calling or visiting one of our services centres located in Upper Nappan, Springhill or Parrsboro.

Amateur Radio Station Installed at

Amateur radio stations continued to be installed in fire halls across the County
Members of the WestCumb ARC along with Cumberland Regional EMO continue to crisscross the county installing amateur radio stations at volunteer fire halls. On September 11, 2017, the groups made another road trip installing an amateur radio station at the Parrsboro Fire Department.

NS Property Assessment Authority Asks Property Owners to Take Part in Checks and Balances

Online information provides property owners the opportunity to review their preliminary assessment and property details before assessments are finalized
Property Valuation Services Corporation (PVSC), the award winning, not-for-profit organization responsible for assessing all property in Nova Scotia, has released 2018 preliminary assessments to the public on their website,

Property owners are encouraged to review their preliminary assessment and contact PVSC if they have additional property information, questions, or wish to further discuss their property.

Warden Al Gillis and Councillor Maryanne Jackson would like to congratulate the Pugwash Communities in Bloom for their recent achievement of being awarded the
National CIB Outstanding Achievement Award in the category of Community Involvement! This award celebrates all our community volunteers and the way that the community got behind the calendar for fundraising and support of the village. It's a terrific tribute to the many volunteers who give countless hours supporting village activities.
Home Hardware sponsors this Outstanding Achievement Award and there's an added bonus that goes along with the honour. Mark Cullen who is an expert gardener, author, broadcaster, and garden editor of Reno and Decor magazine will be coming to Pugwash for a day! He is a third generation career gardener and the Home Hardware Gardening Expert. This will be a great opportunity for Cumberland County and Pugwash to host him. Stay tuned for details.
Norene Smiley and Debbie Cameron are in Ottawa now at the national CIB conference. More awards will be given out on September 16th. We're immensely grateful to the Municipality of Cumberland County and the Pugwash Village Commission for their financial support which made attendance possible.
In addition to winning the Community Involvement Outstanding Achievement Award, Pugwash was a National Finalist in two other categories: Community of Gardeners and Environmental Action.

Community Health Boards (CHBs) across Nova Scotia are now accepting applications for Wellness Fund Grants. Wellness Funds are available to support projects that advance community health board priorities and use a population health-based approach in addressing the social determinants of health.
Funding is intended for new and innovative projects, or enhancements to existing programs that meet an identified community need.
Projects may be funded up to a maximum of $3000. Requests greater will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Grants may be approved for some or all of the funding requested.

Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund
Planning to start a new or enhance an existing program? In need of equipment?
Through the collaboration between a number of organizations, the Sport Fund looks to achieve one goal: to increase sustainable quality sport programs in Nova Scotia.
Following a regional funding model where the initiatives funded in a region are determined by a committee located within that region, the Sport Fund supports the growth of sport at the community level.
Administered by Sport Nova Scotia, the Sport Fund has brought together funding from a number of partners including Support4Sport, Province of Nova Scotia, Sport Canada and Manulife.
We are happy to announce that applications are now being accepted for our next round of funding. The next application deadline is October 15th, 2017.

Gender Equity Capacity Building Support Fund
This fund is designed to help physical activity, sport and recreation organizations create supportive organizational policies, and practices, to increase the engagement of diverse women and girls in sport, and recreation as coaches, leaders and participants.
Various initiatives designed to build the gender equity capacity of organizations are eligible for funding, including: education and training sessions, board development workshops, organizational assessment activities, gender and diversity analysis, policy and action plan development, evaluations, etc.
Applications are available throughout the year.

Community Development Grant
Available through Communities, Culture and Heritage the Community Development Grant is designed to support activities and initiatives which respond to the recreation and physical activity goals and priorities of communities and the Shared Strategy for Recreation in Nova Scotia: Active Living, Inclusion and Access, Connecting People and Nature, Supportive Environments, and Capacity Development.
Applications will be accepted between April 1st and February 1 of a given fiscal year pending legislative approval of the budget.

Women in Sport Encouragement (WISE) Fund invests in the development of female leaders in sport and supports organizations to strengthen their engagement of girls and women in sport. Since 2004, CAAWS has awarded $140,000 in grants to leaders and organizations across Canada!
Our two core areas of emphasis are: retention of girls in sport and expanding female leadership in sport. We are proud to support leaders and organizations who are taking steps to bring these goals to life.
We award 10 grants annually, each valued at $1000, through an application process.

Job Opportunities for Youth - Program Facilitator
Are you an energetic person who values physical activity and enjoys working with children and youth? The YMCA of Cumberland is recruiting 14 After School Program Facilitators in 9 different schools in Cumberland County for the 2017-2018 school year. The YMCA will hire 2 leaders for each school to facilitate the after school program. We are looking for passionate, energetic, mature leaders with an interest in developing leadership skills to lead our programs. The programs will be physical activity-focused, with elements of play, self-leadership and teamwork. The programs take place directly after school and we are looking for leaders who want to be a part of a dynamic team.
- 4-5 hours per week starting October 27, 2017

Funding Opportunity - Youth Green Jobs
The program will provide wage subsidies (50%) to provide green summer youth work opportunities for 2018 and 2019. The wage subsidy will be up to maximum government contribution of $7140 for each youth/job - to be matched by the employer. While employers are welcome to pay a lower or higher wage, the government contribution is capped at $7140 per youth/job. The positions can be 4-16 weeks and the definition of 'youth' will be 18-30.
While t
he program details are not finalized, the definition of a 'green' job is broad including park horticulture and landscaping, parks operations, parks planning, parks technicians, biodiversity, outdoor play/park facilitators, parks ambassadors or interpreters. The jobs are to be 'new' but we have flexibility in this area.
CPRA commits to the sector to make this process flexible, efficient and positive.
To recap, the final partnership agreement still needs to be finalized with the federal government but CPRA is confident in this process and encourages eligible organizations (including municipalities and other sector organizations) to plan accordingly. CPRA encourages municipalities and organizations to budget for this great opportunity to hire that extra position or two or three.... that will move their parks agenda forward.
As soon as guidelines, details and applications are available, CPRA will share with stakeholders through each of the Provincial and Territorial Recreation and Park Associations.
