Packing Smart Lunches for your Child

School is officially back in session and along with packing their book bags, you may have to pack their lunches as well. Packing smart lunch choices that are tasty and nutritious is beneficial and easy to do. One successful key in making sure that your child eats your pack lunch is to include them in the decision making. Get to know your child's food preference and give them an opportunity to plan their lunches.

Here are a few things to consider when selecting food choices.  Choose foods that are pack in good smart carbs such as whole grain bread and cereals, rice and pastas, as well as fruits, starchy vegetables and legumes. Carbohydrate breaks down into sugar and provides the needed energy for your children.

Pick low fat, fiber rich protein foods. Protein helps take the edge off hunger and builds muscles. Choose lean meats such as fish and poultry. Beans are a good source of protein and is rich in fiber.

Focus on fruits and veggies. The recommended daily fruit intake for a 2000 calorie plan is 2 cups and 2 ½ cups for vegetables. Choose fruits and veggies that are bright in colors and high in fibers such as carrots, broccoli, apples, and red grapes.

Lastly limit the amount of sugar and fat intake. It's okay to include sweets or high fat treats such as cookies, brownies, or other goods but serve in moderations.

Packing a healthy school lunch can be easy and fun.
