A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 10 02 17

P arents and Guardians,

October is here, but temperatures still don't feel like Fall has arrived. Today's forecast calls for temperatures and heat indexes in the 90's. I imagine our extra-curricular groups with outdoor activities are ready for the switch to milder temperatures.

I am sure it is already on your calendar, but students have a school holiday this Friday, October 6th and next Monday, October 9th. I hope your students have a great 4-day weekend and enjoy their much deserved break.

A few weeks ago, I recognized our 5 five LHS students who were named 2018 National Merit Semi-Finalists in my weekly email. This year's Junior Class will get their chance to compete and be part of the 2019 group next Wednesday, October 11th when they take the PSAT. All students in grades 9-11 will take the exam on that day, but only 11th graders are eligible to be named National Merit Semi-Finalists. The exam will be begin around 9:00 a.m. and will conclude around 12:30.

Please take a few minutes to review the information below about important dates and events.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

* Followed by the Calendar of Events and Activities
* Older items appear below the calendar until they become obsolete

An Important Message from the Student Nutrition Department
Families who wish to apply for free or reduced priced meals need to complete a new income application every school year. The free/reduced price eligibility of our returning students rolled over to this school year for the first 30 school days. However, last school year's Free/Reduced Priced School Meal Applications are set to expire on October 2, 2017. Students who currently receive free or reduced price meals but whose family have not yet submitted an application for the 2017-2018 school year or who have not received an eligibility letter from the Student Nutrition Office will be changed to full pay status on October 2, 2017. Households will be responsible for the cost of school lunch until a new application is submitted and processed. If you have not already completed a 2017-2018 Free/ Reduced Income Application you can pick one up at your school's office, cafeteria, or download one from our website at www.lovejoyisd.net . To download an application from the website click on Departments, Student Nutrition, then Free/Reduced Income Applications. Once completed please return the application to the Student Nutrition Office.

Student Recognition

LHS Senior Project
Lovejoy senior Savannah Roulette recently conducted her charity golf tournament, "Tee It Up Fore MS" in honor of her mother, Trish Roulette, and golf coach, Kevin Johnson at WestRidge Golf Course in McKinney. Savannah took the spirit of Senior Project's growth and experience mindset and ran with it! Through her activities, Savannah developed and utilized outstanding networking skills to obtain corporate sponsors for the event and gained regional publicity from FOX 4 and other news publications. She also organized a prize structure for tournament winners and held a silent auction with prizes including a set of golf clubs, golf lessons, a weeklong stay at a condo on the Comal River in New Braunfels, a round of golf at Cowboys Golf Club, and of course, an autographed Jamie Benn game jersey. Through her months-long and tireless effort, Savannah raised over $100,000 for her tournament and made a countless number of connections through sponsorships and visibility. Her biggest sponsor was the Dallas Stars, and Jamie Benn himself agreed to donate $10,000 to Savannah's cause.

Savannah Roulette's project is not only exemplary, it's also a shining example of personal growth and development, love for humankind, spirit of interest, and general passion for the greater good. Lovejoy is proud to recognize Savannah for her work.

LHS Journalism
The Leopard Spotlight broadcast from the Lovejoy News Network has been named as one of 15 finalists for the National Scholastic Press Association's Pacemaker award.
"The Pacemaker is the association's preeminent award and is often called the Pulitzer Prize of scholastic journalism," said Laura Widmer, NSPA executive director. "NSPA is honored to recognize the best of the best."
Last year was the debut of Leopard Spotlight as LNN's flagship broadcast. Seven episodes of the monthly magazine-style show were produced last year under the direction of executive producer Matthew Cinquepalmi, a 2017 graduate.

Five students have also been selected as national finalists for NSPA's prestigious individual awards. Only 10 finalists were selected in each category.

Senior Hannah Ortega of The Red Ledger is a finalist for story of the year in the category of sports for her human interest feature on former Leopard baseball player Jacob Parrott.

Junior Parker Nolan of The Red Ledger is a finalist for photo of the year in the category of environmental portrait for his photo of 2017 graduate John Reaves for a story on Reaves' senior project.

Ortega and Nolan, along with senior Nick Smith and sophomore Kelsey Carroll were also named as members of the UIL all-state journalism staff over the summer.

Two LNN entries were named finalists for broadcast story of the year: seniors Bradley Davis and Grant Dennis in the category of news, and senior Clayton Houts in the category of sports.

Pacemaker and individual award winners will be announced at the JEA/NSPA National Convention to be held in Dallas in November.

Eagle Project:  Hurricane Harvey Relief
A message from Hunter Kight, WSMS 8th grader:

"My name is Hunter Kight, I am an 8th grader at Willow Springs, and I've just started my eagle project. I have chosen to help the Hurricane Harvey victims for my project. Many of the victims did not have flood insurance and this looks to be the most costly natural disaster in U.S. history. The clean-up and rebuild effort will take more than a year. There is a time during disasters like this that charities experience donor fatigue. This is where donations drop to their lowest. Through my project I am trying to reduce donor fatigue, by collecting basic essential items. I have partnered with the Salvation Army to collect supplies like canned goods, baby food/formula, hygiene items, diapers and cases of water. Large donation boxes are located at each school to collect these items. I will leave these boxes out until November 3, 2017. Please consider supporting this effort by filling the boxes and helping the victims."
