Library News & Events - For Adults
                October 2017
It's October and National Reading Group Month!  As you might guess, libraries are big on book discussions of any kind, and we've got just the tools to help you have an awesome reading group / book club meeting.

We have book club kits that include 10 copies of the book, and discussion questions that you can check out for your group. If you are looking to join a book group, we have several library-sponsored book clubs that meet monthly.  (See our newest book group at the Savage Library below.)  And if you need book recommendations, or background information on an author, we've got you covered - just check with our knowledgeable reference staff.

"Books are something social - a writer speaking to a reader - so I think making the reading of a book the center of a social event, the meeting of a book club, is a brilliant idea."
     - Yann Martel (the author of Life of Pi)

Easy Publishing Tools for Local Authors!

Do you have a book in you?  Local authors - indie, self-published, aspiring, and mainstream - can now create eBooks and share them with readers across the state and country using free tools provided by the Scott County Library.

Three tools make your book available to readers:  Pressbooks gives you the ability to design and export your book;  Self-e allows you to upload your book as an eBook; and  Biblioboard  enables you to share your book with readers across the state, and potentially around the country.

A great promise of the online world is access to knowledge. As top universities like MIT and Harvard offer popular courses online at no cost, and websites like Code Academy, Khan Academy, and Coursera have built solid reputations, education online is more dynamic than ever before. Some platforms offer the opportunity to earn certificates of completion, and there are even ways to translate your learning to college credit. What does it mean to learn in the virtual world? Where do you begin? Is this just for fun or are there more tangible benefits? This workshop will provide participants with an overview of popular, free, online learning platforms and help the curious and the motivated to start exploring the endless opportunities for online learning. Presented by Twin Cities Media Alliance and funded by MELSA.
