OLD TYME APPLE FESTIVAL: A FALL LAKE OF THE OZARKS TRADITION

Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. - One of the Lake of the Ozarks' longest-running fall festivals, the Olde Tyme Apple Festival, returns to Versailles, Saturday, Oct. 7.

The Olde Tyme Apple Festival celebrates the fall harvest and offers many delicious apple-focused treats like fresh-baked apple pies, apple dumplings, caramel apples and more.
Recently voted the best annual festival in the state by readers of Rural Missouri magazine, this award-winning festival celebrates its 38th year this autumn and brings in nearly 30,000 visitors for festivities celebrating the traditional fall apple harvest. 

Although the festival does not officially begin until Saturday, some activities get underway on Friday evening, October 6. There will be a couple different pageant competitions: the Baby Dumplings and Apple Tarts contest at 6 p.m. and the Apple Dumplin' and Darlin' contest at 6:30 p.m. Both pageants take place at the First Baptist Church, 211 East Jasper Street, in downtown.

At the Sonic Drive-In, 401 South Highway 5, there will be a classic car cruise-in at 6:30 p.m. followed by an old-fashioned "sock hop" from 7-11 p.m. During the "sock hop" at 7:30 p.m., the King and Queen of the Apple Festival will be crowned.

On Saturday, the festival kicks off early with a pancake breakfast from 6:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 208 North Fischer Street.
 
Versailles picturesque downtown square will be lined with vendors peddling arts and crafts as well as traditional festival fare.
By 9 a.m., hundreds of vendors will line the streets around the town square for an arts and crafts fair.  Food vendors will offer sweet  apple treats like  apple dumplings, caramel apples and apple butter, as well as other favorite festival foods. Also opening at 9 a.m. is the Fun Zone for kids, at the corner of Jasper and Krekel streets and tours of the Morgan County Museum, 118 North Monroe Street, and the homemade quilt show at the Bank of Versailles, 113 East Newton Street, begin at 9 a.m. as well.
 
The annual Apple Festival parade will wind through downtown beginning at 10 a.m. at the Morgan County School, 913 West Newtown Street.

The celebrated Finley River Boys of Springfield, Mo. play on the main stage on Saturday following the parade through downtown Versailles and again from 1-5 p.m.
Following the parade, t he Finley River Boys bring traditional gospel and classic bluegrass sounds to the festivities at the main stage before e ntries in the  Apple  Pie Baking Contest are auctioned off at noon. These homemade pies offer a chance to take home a delicious souvenir of the  festival  to the highest bidders. 

Live musical entertainment also takes place on the second stage located at North Monroe Street beginning at 12:30 p.m. with performances by Mitch Shields and special guest Melani Biggers, who happens to be Mitch's daughter and a regular performer with the Main Street Music Hall in Osage Beach. An encore performance by the Finley River Boys will take place back on the main stage from 1-5 p.m.

Also at 1 p.m., the Olde Tyme Fiddle Contest will have toes tapping as contestants rosin up their bows and play for prizes at the Royal Theatre, 107 Monroe Street. Admission to the Fiddle Contest is $2 per person.

The annual car show will take place at the Versailles City Park on Saturday, Oct. 7.
The annual car show will take place at the Versailles City Park, 910 West Newton Street, with registration running from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Vehicles of many makes and models will be on display throughout the day, while local deejay Leo Case spins classic hits. Awards in many different categories will be presented at 4 p.m.

Special for the 2017 edition of the Olde Tyme Apple Festival is "The Moving Wall," which will be on display in the baseball field at Versailles City Park.  "The Moving Wall" is the half-size replica of the Washington, D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which has been touring the country for thirty plus years. The memorial  will be in Versailles and on display 24 hours a day from Thursday, Oct. 5 through Monday, Oct. 9. There will be an opening ceremony for the memorial, which the public is encouraged to attend, on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, "The Moving Wall," will be on display in Versailles from Thursday, Oct. 5 through Monday, Oct. 9. The display will be open 24 hours per day.
The downtown celebration will wind down at 5 p.m. on Saturday before race fans head to the Morgan County Fairgrounds, 10528 Nolt Road, for the Compact Figure 8 Race and Powder Puff Scramble beginning at 7 p.m.

The Royal Theatre's performances of "Moses" coincide with the  festival.  The play will begin nightly at 7 p.m. from Thursday, Oct. 5, through Saturday, Oct. 7, as well as the following weekend, October 12-14.

The  Olde  Tyme  Apple  Festival Three-Person Scramble golf tournament is scheduled for a noon shotgun start on Sunday, Oct. 8, at Rolling Hills Country Club, located one mile north of the junction of Highways 52 and 5.  The tournament is open to the public and Rolling Hills will handle pairings for individual golfers.  To register for the tournament, contact Rolling Hills at or go to the club's website at www.PlayRollingHills.com.
