The Optimist International Global Spotlight was created to provide another means of communication between Optimist International and the Optimist Clubs outside of the United States and Canada.  The newsletter will be sent monthly. If you have suggestions for improvements, Club projects, articles for inclusion and/or other information about your Club, contact communications@optimist.org
"We met recently, and the group members (about 35) mandated me to spearhead working together with Optimist International and the possibility of opening up the Kenyan chapter. They had several queries, but I am sure as we move along we shall be able to address them. Please guide me now on the next move."  - Sikujua Seboru, Nairobi, Kenya

The Optimist movement is alive and well in eastern Africa. Sikujua initially contacted Optimist International in mid-August to inquire about processes, procedures, and requirements for developing an Optimist presence in the Kenya capital. Since then, Optimist International received several other leads and all are now part of the Club development effort. The group is considering working with an existing educational organization for young people as it goes forward. The leaders of the educators contacted Optimist International how they could work with us. The Optimist Club of Nairobi will likely become a reality within two months!
Mentoring Clubs Sought for Overseas Development Efforts

Optimist International is in need of Clubs in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean nations that are willing to be mentors for new Optimist Clubs forming overseas.  A Club in this capacity will come alongside our overseas Optimists in Africa and Asia, as well Central and South America, to help guide them on their Optimist journey. "Mentoring" Clubs will be expected to maintain monthly contact with the overseas Club, provide ideas for new projects and fundraising opportunities, guidance through recognition programs, and offer financial advice and assistance.

If your Club would be willing to be listed as a potential mentoring Club, contact the New Club Building Department at newclub@optimist.org.
Optimists Cross Borders to Network and Collaborate

Representatives of four overseas Clubs recently concluded two cross border visits in an effort to connect, exchange gifts, and learn about initiatives and projects underway in their respective Clubs.  Dakar, Senegal Club President Mamadou Gueye, and Bamako, Mali Club President Dr. Mamoudou Kanoute gathered in Dakar. Serve People Optimist Club of Nepal President Deepak Bhandari caught up with Thailand Junior Golf Optimist Club President Piyathida Chaiyapan in Bangkok during Deepak's visit to her country.

Spotlight on Jamaica

This month's spotlight is on the Royal Optimist Club of Kingston, Jamaica. The Club recently completed a much needed service project. The Optimists participated in International Coastal Clean Up Day.  Members gathered bags of trash along nearby shores.
