Five students to attend Governor's Honors

Carrollton High School students, from left, Eva Hobson, Maria Roman, Michael Morgan, Blair Lipham and Grace Hale all will be traveling to Berry College this summer to participate in the Governor's Honors Program, continuing a tradition of high participation.   CHS produced three finalists for the program in 2012 and 2013, four in 2014, one finalist in 2015 and four in 2016.  "Having one student from your school make Governor's Honors is impressive, so we were especially pleased that for several years now more students are given this exceptional opportunity," said David Brooks, CHS principal. "Typically only magnet schools produce this kind of consistent participation." MORE
CHS to host state track event next week
With hundreds of athletes competing in the Georgia High School Association track and field state championships to be held at Grisham Stadium next Thursday through Saturday, May 11-13,  Carrollton City Schools is making special accommodations to manage parking and traffic congestion anticipated for the event , said Craig George, assistant superintendent of Operations for the school system.

Classes will be held as normal both Thursday and Friday, but employees have been asked to park off campus to free up parking space. High school students will park in the lot across from the Mabry Center for the Arts behind the Systems and Methods corporate complex, which is already a designated student parking area.

"Car rider drop-off/pick-up and bus routes will run as normal on Thursday and Friday," said George. "We are following normal protocol to avoid delays."

George said the school system is making sure residents in the area are aware of the activity on campus during those days and asking for their patience as the events play out.

"By Saturday morning, the volume of activity will have diminished greatly as only those who have qualified for the finals will still be competing," he said. Presentation of trophies is scheduled for 5 p.m. that evening.

Students earn region
young authors honors

Three Carrollton City Schools students were named regional winners in the Young Georgia Authors writing competition, capturing top honors for public schools in Carroll, Coweta, Harris, Heard, Meriwether and Troup counties.

Amelia Walter, Willow Huett, Jackson Newbern and other winners from the regional level moved on to state-level competition for another round of judging. At this level of competition, Willow was one of only two eighth graders in the entire state to place second, classified as an "honorable mention" award. Her winning short story, "Detached," can be read here.

Amelia is a third grader in Tabitha Walker's class at Carrollton Elementary School. Willow is a student of Emmanuel Reddish at Carrollton Junior High. Jackson is a junior at Carrollton High School and a student of David Bryson.

"We are extremely proud of these students," said Anna Clifton, assistant superintendent of Teaching and Learning. "This is a testament to not only their individual talents and abilities, but also to the teachers who have nurtured them. We feel strongly that our district focus on literacy, including writing, is making a difference. Their performance further demonstrates this fact." MORE
