October means that Midterm Examinations are near! Your student may require additional support in studying for these examinations, and we suggest you encourage your student to seek the assistance of the CLASS (Center for Learning and Student Success) Office. It is never too late to take advantage of tutoring or group study sessions. As your student participates in midterm examinations, it is important to begin to think about the follow up conversations you both will have. How do you view your collaboration in their academic endeavors? Remember there are many resources on campus to assist students who may struggle with academic pressures or may require additional academic support.

Homecoming is a time for students, faculty, staff, and alum to celebrate their Owl Spirit. There are many spirited events for your student to participate in during Homecoming Week, Oct. 14-21. These events are opportunities for your student to build a community with the university, meet fellow students and faculty, and engage on campus. Please encourage your student to participate in any or all events.

The Owl Parent Association will be hosting two upcoming events for you! The Homecoming Celebration allows parents, families, and guests the opportunity to join in on the Owl Spirit events, including a service project, tailgate, and football game. Spring Family Weekend invites you and your family to campus to engage in many different events with your student. We hope to see you at these upcoming events.

Encourage your student to participate in a great leadership opportunity and volunteer as a  Transfer Orientation Guide! Your student can volunteer with their fellow Transfer peers and help guide new incoming transfer students through their orientation experience. In this role, students have the opportunity to create a welcoming experience for all transfer students, while sharing their stories and experiences with them.
Is your student looking for a job this summer? New Student Orientation is searching for 2018 Orientation Leaders. The Orientation Leader (O.L.) position is one of the most prestigious student leader positions at Florida Atlantic University. This group of student leaders have the unique opportunity to welcome over 7,000 new owls and family members to our university community. Throughout this leadership experience, you will gain skills that will prepare you for the future, both personally and professionally all while having the summer of your life. 
Is your student looking for opportunities to exercise on campus? Encourage them to check out the Campus Recreation & Fitness Center's group fitness schedule. 
Did your student transfer into FAU? Encourage them to join the Transfer Student Organization. Our Transfer Student Organization is a student-run organization with the purpose of providing a community for all transfer students.

  • Dream: Encourage your student to pursue their passions and engage in the FAU community. You can find out what they are passionate about, what they would like to do if money and time weren't issues, and what legacy they would want to leave at FAU when they graduate.

K n o w i n g   Y o u r   S t u d e n t
First-Year Student
  • Begin discussing next year's living arrangements with your student. Your student and your family may have different ideas for the upcoming academic year and it is important to communicate since housing re-contracting begins next month. If your student plans to live on campus for their second year, they should begin the re-contracting process with the Housing Office. 
Second-Year Student
  • "Roles and relationships in some families become fixed over time. If parents are not able to accomodate the changes in their children during the college years, they force their children to make a choice between remaining part of a rigid family system or continuing to grow and develop as humans." (Johnson & Schelhas-Miller, 2011). Changes in roles and relationships will change throughout the college years.
Third-Year Student
  • The third year in college is sometimes viewed as the ideal time to seek an internship. If your student is considering an internship, encourage them to utilize the many resources on campus. Internships provide the student with opportunities to gain real-world experience to add to their resume. The Career Center has many resources for seeking and solidifying an internship, on or off campus. 
Fourth-Year Student
  • There are many career fairs that will be hosted on campus over the next few weeks. It is important that your student becomes comfortable networking with employers, meeting new people, and dressing for success. Encourage your student to meet with the Career Center prior to attending the fairs, as they can assist with the development of mock interviews and resume development.
